Simms Challenging Orton In Denver
Chris Simms is giving Kyle Orton a run for his money in the race to become the starting quarterback of the Broncos.
Orton was expected by many to win the job without much of a problem, but Simms had other plans.
"I understand everybody else looking at it that way, but to me it doesn't even matter," Simms said. "Regardless, I'm coming out here trying to do my best, trying to learn the offense and compete. At the end of the day, you do your best and let the coaches make their decision."
Simms took more reps with the first team on Thursday, but hasn't necessarily overtaken Orton yet.
"No," coach Josh McDaniels said. "Same thing. Both of them will take reps with the (first team), and we're going to keep doing that until it becomes clear and apparent, and it's not yet. They're both doing some good things, and they're both making some mistakes. When one seems to put himself ahead of the other, then it will be an easy decision."
Marshall Wants New Deal From Broncos
Brandon Marshall is hoping to force the Broncos to restructure his contract by skipping the team's voluntary passing camp.
Marshall delivered his request for a raise last week to Broncos coach Josh McDaniels, according to the Denver Post.
The wide reciever, who is recovering from hip surgery, has moved his rehab away from the team's headquarters.
"Brandon is not a holdout," Marshall's attorney Harvey Steinberg said. "He went back to Orlando so he could continue rehabbing from his surgery."
Broncos Release J.J. Arrington
J.J. Arrington was released by the Broncos after he failed a physical due to a balky right knee.
The team confirmed the move Thursday.
Arrington was one of three veteran tailbacks the Broncos brought in during the offseason, along with Correll Buckhalter and LaMont Jordan. The team had placed seven running backs on injured reserve last season.
The Broncos also selected Knowshon Moreno with the 12th pick in the draft to bolster the backfield.
Broncos Want More Turnovers From Defense
Denver frequently lost the turnover battle in 2008, something they hope Mike Nolan can change this season.
"That's something as a secondary unit we talk about ? the amount of takeaways we had last year," said Josh Barrett, who started the final three games as a rookie safety last year. "Suffice to say we didn't do enough to help us win. Having that approach and sticking with it ... In practice we have drills that are just for stripping to ball."
Elway OK With Son's Decision To Quit
According to the Denver Post, legendary Broncos quarterback John Elway is comfortable with his son's decision to quit playing football.
Jack Elway, a redshirt freshman at Arizona State, decided to leave the team last month.
"He sounds better," the elder Elway said. "Just talking to him, it's like the world has been lifted off his shoulders. So I'm happy for him."
Moreno Is Working To Learn Broncos' Offense
Broncos rookie running back Knowshon Moreno is working to learn the complex offense of new coach Josh McDaniels.
"Running around like my head's cut off," Moreno said of the confusing playbook.
Many players felt the same way as Moreno at the conclusion of the team's three-day minicamp this weekend.
"They're going to make mistakes for a little while," McDaniels said. "That's what these practices are for, to get those kinks out and hopefully come to training camp and not have to iron them all out."
Moreno realizes that he is going to have to study the books during his downtime.
"You've got to really study, you've got to be in the playbook at night when you get home, even though it's late," said Moreno. "It's tough."
Moreno Gets OK From Broncos For No. 27
Broncos rookie running back Knowshon Moreno has gotten the OK to wear No. 27, which hasn't seen the field since the death of cornerback Darrent Williams in 2006.
Moreno personally called Rosalind Williams, Darrent's mother, to ask if he could wear the number, according to the Denver Post.
Moreno wore No. 24 in college, but the number is worn by Champ Bailey in Denver.
