Legal Officials Say Broncos' Lie-Detector Test Was Out Of Line

Oct 20, 2014 8:23 PM

Denver attorney Colin Barnacle, a fervent Denver Broncos fan and season ticket holder, isn?t one to challenge Mike Shanahan. But when the coach of the beloved Broncos subjected one of his players to a lie-detector test, Barnacle threw the flag. If clients call seeking advice on whether that?s a legal move, Barnacle?s reply is usually no. A federal law bars employers from using the exam in most cases. The Bronco on the hot seat is David Kircus. The receiver said he acted in self-defense in an incident that led to second-degree assault charges against him. Shanahan, instead of simply standing on the sidelines, came up with the idea to grill Kircus with a lie-detector to determine whether he was being honest. The 27-year-old athlete, reportedly eager to sit down and face the interrogation, passed. "If he flunked the test, he would not be with us," Shanahan was quoted as saying.

Kircus Passes Lie Detector Test

Oct 20, 2014 8:23 PM

Broncos receiver David Kircus' job is no longer in jeopardy over allegations he threw a punch that landed a man in the hospital with multiple facial fractures. Coach Mike Shanahan, who had pledged to release Kircus if it was determined he was at fault in the fight, said Kircus passed a lie-detector test administered by an expert. Kircus will remain with the team regardless of the legal outcome of his case. "David came to me and said, 'Hey Coach, I guarantee I did not take the first swing. I defended myself. I probably used poor judgment, being at the wrong place at the wrong time.' "I said, 'Well David, I'll give you a chance to take a lie-detector test,' and he wanted to do that. And he passed it with flying colors, so he will be on our football team," Shanahan said.

A false imprisonment charge against Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall stemming from a domestic dispute was dismissed. Attorney Harvey Steinberg said the charge was dismissed Friday in a Douglas County court. A spokesman for the district attorney did not immediately return a call seeking comment. Marshall was arrested in March after a woman who identified herself as his girlfriend said Marshall used his vehicle to block her taxi as she tried to leave his home south of Denver. She said they had been arguing.

Broncos Happy Over Trio Of Draft Picks

Sep 28, 2014 7:40 AM

No one at Broncos headquarters was happier following the draft than Bill Johnson, Denver's new defensive line coach. And nobody was hoarser Friday following the team's first week of passing camp, either. The Broncos used three of their four draft picks on defensive linemen, taking Florida teammates Jarvis Moss and Marcus Thomas and Texas end Tim Crowder.

Denver Practices With Heavy Hearts

Sep 28, 2014 7:40 AM

The Broncos returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since the deaths of teammates Darrent Williams and Damien Nash in the offseason. "Their memories are going to stay here for a long time," coach Mike Shanahan said. "We're going to embrace it and no be afraid to talk about it." Williams was slain in an unsolved drive-by shooting on New Year's morning. Nash collapsed after a charity basketball game in February and died of unknown causes. Both were 24.
