Lelie Must Repay Denver $600,000

Sep 12, 2014 9:11 PM

An arbitrator ruled in Denver's favor this week on a grievance it had filed against Ashley Lelie, writing the final chapter in the receiver's eventful four-year stay with the franchise. Lelie must repay a $600,000 chunk of the signing bonus he received as the team's No. 1 draft pick in 2002.

Broncos Wants Willis, Trying To Move Up Board

Sep 12, 2014 9:13 PM

The Broncos have talked with several teams about moving up slightly, somewhere between picks 10 and 19, with, at the moment, either the Texans (No. 10) or Steelers (No. 15) looking like the most likely trading partners. The Broncos, on the hunt for a linebacker, would like Mississippi's Patrick Willis, last season's Butkus Award winner who is clearly the best middle linebacker on the board and who could play the strong side, but Denver will likely have to get above the Bills at No. 12 to do it.

Broncos Want Calvin Johnson

Sep 17, 2014 3:12 AM

Mike Shanahan, Ted Sundquist and Jim Goodman of the Broncos are so enamored with receiver Calvin Johnson that they have attempted to acquire a pick to get him twice. The first time, the Broncos proposed adding middle linebacker Al Wilson and their No. 21 overall pick as an extension to finalize a deal that sent Tatum Bell and George Foster to the Lions in exchange for Dr? Bly. The second time, the Broncos offered picks in the first, second and third rounds, plus their first-round pick in 2008, for the Lions' No. 2 selection, a trade contingent on the Oakland Raiders not taking Johnson with their No. 1 choice.

Sauerbrun Returns To Denver

Nov 9, 2014 1:35 PM

Todd Sauerbrun hated leaving Denver on bad terms last fall. Now he's getting a chance to atone for his blunder with the Broncos. The 13-year veteran punter agreed to a one-year contract Thursday with the team that jettisoned him last October after he was suspended for violating the NFL's drug policy. He was caught using the banned dietary aid ephedra in a misguided attempt to lose weight and gain gusto for his workouts. Sauerbrun's deal with Denver was worth more than the $1.395 million he was scheduled to make with the Broncos last year. Sauerbrun started the 2006 season with Denver, but lost his job to Paul Ernster while serving a four-game suspension for using ephedra. Sauerbrun, who is expected to sign the contract on Friday, and Ernster will compete for the job in training camp this summer.

Sauerbrun Wins Grievance, Becomes Free Agent

Nov 9, 2014 1:35 PM

Punter Todd Sauerbrun won his grievance against the Patriots on Wednesday and is now a free agent. The 13-year veteran is expected to join the Broncos. He agreed to a one-year deal with them earlier this month, but the Patriots matched it through a clause in his contract with New England. Sauerbrun had signed with the Patriots last December and punted in the playoffs.

Sauerbrun Awaiting Ruling

Apr 10, 2014 11:19 PM

A grievance against the Patriots, fought for Todd Sauerbrun by the NFL Players Association, was heard in Boston on Tuesday by a special master. A decision is expected within a week. The meeting lasted about an hour. Sauerbrun was not present. Last week, NFLPA general counsel Richard Berthelsen said he was confident Sauerbrun would win the appeal. The grievance is about whether the Patriots had rights of first refusal to Sauerbrun, who had signed with them in December.

Colorado Court Refuses To Hear Appeal In Mobley DUI Case

May 30, 2014 6:30 PM

Colorado's Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear an appeal from former Broncos linebacker John Mobley, who was sentenced to seven days in jail for a drunken driving conviction. Defense attorneys had implied during Mobley's trial in April 2004 that his conviction was the result of racial profiling. Prosecutors had said Mobley would not have to serve his sentence until his appeal was complete. It was unclear when he might be jailed. Mobley's attorney, Harvey Steinberg, did not immediately return a call for comment.

NFL Penalties Stun Board's Foxworth

May 18, 2014 4:00 AM

When Domonique Foxworth participated in a player conduct advisory board at the NFL combine in Indianapolis, he knew something major was coming. "It was a think tank," the Broncos cornerback said. "A lot was talked about, and the players had a lot of input." Still, Foxworth admits he was surprised by the severity of the suspensions commissioner Roger Goodell levied against two players who, at least in part, inspired the February meeting: Tennessee cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones and Cincinnati receiver Chris Henry. This week Goodell suspended Jones for the entire 2007 season and banned Henry for the first eight games. "Considering that the incidents were (before) the conduct meeting, I was surprised by how harsh the punishments were that came down," Foxworth said. "I think that's in concert with how the players feel, how the coaches feel. It's how the fans feel. But as far as these particular suspensions, it was a shock to me. It's apparent the NFL will clean up the league one way or another."

Denver Releases LB Al Wilson

Apr 13, 2014 2:42 AM

The Broncos have released five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Al Wilson. Wilson said Friday the team had told him the news the previous night. A Broncos spokesman declined comment earlier in the day. "I've had a great time here. I feel like I've got a few more good years in me, too," Wilson said. He said he might play with another team if he can get medical clearance from a neck injury he suffered in a Dec. 3 game against Seattle. "I'll only get out there and play if I'm healthy," he said.

Wilson Schedules News Conference To Thank Denver Fans

Nov 26, 2014 4:14 AM

Broncos linebacker Al Wilson scheduled a news conference Friday to announce he is being released by the Broncos after eight seasons, sources said. Wilson called a 4 p.m. ET meeting with the media in Denver to discuss his future, which will not include the Broncos, the team that made him a No. 1 draft choice in 1999 and allowed him to grow into the leadership role on playoff caliber defenses. Wilson leaves the Broncos as a four-time Pro Bowl player and one of the top defenders in franchise history.
