The Broncos are desperate to unload disgruntled receiver Ashley Lelie, but there are no takers. Among the teams the Broncos have contacted: New England, Chicago, San Francisco and Philadelphia.

Clarett Hires New Lawyers

Former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett has hired two new attorneys to represent him in his trial on burglary and weapons charges after he fired attorneys William Settina and Robert Krapenc a week ago in a single-paragraph letter. The 22-year-old Clarett is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, four counts of robbery and one count of carrying a concealed weapon. Authorities said he was identified by witnesses as the person who flashed a gun and robbed two people in an alley behind the Opium Lounge in the early hours of Jan. 1. Clarett is a former third round selection by the Denver Broncos who failed to make the team.

Broncos, QB Cutler Agree On Six-Year Contract

Rookie quarterback Jay Cutler signed a contract with the Broncos on Thursday, hours before the team's first workout. The team announced the signing Thursday night, hours before its first training camp workout Friday morning. Terms were not disclosed. However, a report on the web site of the Rocky Mountain News said Cutler, Denver's first-round pick, agreed to a six-year deal worth up to $48 million. The sixth year is at the team's option, according to the report.

Clarett Fires Lawyers Two Weeks Before Trial

Maurice Clarett, a third round selection by the Denver Broncos in 2005 has fired both of his attorneys two weeks before his trial. Clarett, 22, turned himself in on Jan. 2 to face charges of flashing a gun and robbing two people in an alley behind a bar. As a freshman, Clarett scored the winning touchdown in the second overtime to lead Ohio State to the 2002 national championship, the school's first since 1968. But that was the last game he played for the Buckeyes. He sat out the 2003 season after being charged with misdemeanor falsification on a police report. After dropping out of school, he sued to be included in the 2004 NFL draft and lost in court.

Cutler Closing In On Contract With Broncos

Bus Cook, agent for Jay Cutler, believes the negotiations between his client and the Denver Broncos will go down to the wire ahead of training camp. "I believe it is going to take all of the next three days to get this done," Cook said Monday evening. "I do believe we're going to get it done. I've had good talks with the Broncos and they are good people, but this will take time. I think and hope Jay is the future quarterback of the Broncos, and we all want him in soon."

Sauerbrun Suspended For Drug Use

Broncos punter Todd Sauerbrun will be suspended for the first month of the NFL season after testing positive for the banned supplement ephedra. The 12-year veteran avoided reporters by apparently exiting through side door to the players' parking lot. Broncos Coach Mike Shanahan said that he will wait until the appeals process is completed before addressing the suspension. Shanahan reinforced that he has spoken to his players about the repercussions of using banned substances.

Prosecutors offered Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer a plea deal to settle municipal charges in an alleged road rage incident, a police spokesman said Thursday. City attorney Dugan Comer made the plea offer during a private pretrial conference, said Englewood police investigator John Hoehler. "An offer was made, and Jake's attorney was going to discuss it with his client," Hoehler said.
