Shanahan Fined $20K For Criticism Of Game Officals

Oct 18, 2014 10:12 PM

Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan has been fined $20,000 by the NFL for his public criticism of game officials following last Sunday's 20-17 victory over San Diego. The fine, which had been anticipated, was confirmed Friday by a league spokesman. It is believed to be the first such sanction against Shanahan during his NFL career. Shanahan was critical of officials for negating a 61-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game. The score was nullified when game officials flagged Denver for having too many players on the field during the runback by rookie cornerback Darrent Williams.

Denver Brings Back Quentin Griffin

Oct 18, 2014 10:11 PM

The Denver Broncos signed running back Quentin Griffin on Tuesday, bringing back last season's opening-day starter who was surprisingly released before this season began. To make room for Griffin, the Broncos waived kickoff specialist Paul Ernster, a seventh-round draft pick who was inactive for last Sunday's game against the Chargers. Denver also released quarterback Kliff Kingsbury from its practice squad.

Broncos CB Bailey Expects To Keep Steak Alive

He hasn't missed a game in his seven-year NFL career and Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey doesn?t plan on ending that streak just yet. "If I'm in pads during the week, I'm probably going to play," Bailey said. "So, there's no doubt that I'll probably be out there. As long as I don't have any setbacks, I'll be fine." Bailey was listed as questionable after dislocating his shoulder last week against Miami.

Broncos Sign David Terrell

Oct 28, 2014 4:44 PM

The Denver Broncos signed free agent wide receiver David Terrell on Wednesday to take the spot vacated when Jerry Rice retired. Terrell, a fifth-year player, was released by New England on Saturday after signing with the team on April 5. He was a first-round draft choice of the Chicago Bears and eighth overall in 2001, but never made much of a contribution with the Bears. ``It is nice to have him in and get him started,'' coach Mike Shanahan said. ``He will get a chance to adapt this week and start to get used to a different language.''

Rice Goes With A Whimper

Oct 18, 2014 10:10 PM

Unwilling to be a bit player with the Broncos, Jerry Rice retired Monday, closing a 20-year career for the most productive receiver in NFL history. Rice, 42, made his decision over the weekend at home in San Francisco, then returned to Broncos headquarters and met with coach Mike Shanahan. He played 20 NFL seasons. ``This is a happy day,'' he said. ``I think the tears that you see basically is that I have really enjoyed this ride. ``I'm done. I'm looking forward to the next phase of my life.'' Shanahan confirmed what Rice already knew -- that he would be a fourth or fifth receiver, at best this season -- and Rice confirmed what many figured -- that he would rather call it quits than be a bit player with the Broncos.

Rice Ponders Retirement

Jun 9, 2014 5:23 PM

Jerry Rice was informed Saturday that he made the Broncos roster, but he is being given time to consider retirement if he doesn't want to be Denver's fourth receiver. Rice is going to take the next couple of days to decide if he wants to play a 21st season. Rice left Denver on Saturday afternoon to contemplate his future and will return within the next day or two. "Jerry is still on the roster, but he is going to take a few days to think about what he wants to do," said his agent, Jim Steiner. "The Broncos want him to be on the roster, but this might not be the role he would want. He'll have to make a decision in the next couple of days." Darius Watts' strong performance in Friday night's 30-21 preseason victory over Arizona won him the No. 3 job behind Rod Smith and Ashley Lelie. Rice had moved ahead of Watts on the depth chart earlier in camp, but Watts' recent push changed the team's thinking. At 42, Rice has said this would be his final season. Should he not want to be a Bronco, he likely will retire. He did not want to retire in February, so the Seahawks gave him his release. The Broncos signed him and gave him a chance to be a backup.
