Jerry Jones Confirms Role In Negotiating Roger Goodell's Contract

Sep 19, 2017 12:04 PM

Jerry Jones confirmed his role in the negotiations of Roger Goodell's new contract as commissioner of the NFL.

“First of all, it is a time that he’s expressed interest and the league has expressed interest and renewing and extending his agreement,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “Now, you just have to get used to this in the NFL, you’re not always going to be on the same side of the fence with the Commissioner. And certainly when he’s negotiating to extend his contract, he’s negotiating and the league is in a position of negotiating with him. So it shouldn’t surprise anybody that you’re not always on the same side of the ledger.”

Jones reportedly believes Goodell's salary as commissioner has been too high.

“I’m well known as having been a support of Roger Goodell,” Jones said. “On the other hand, when you get into negotiating and extending, you find yourself in a negotiation. And I think that’s what you’re getting the sense of. There’s just negotiation going on. . . . What we’re talking about is his agreement and certainly — just picture this, you could certainly be supportive of Roger Goodell but not necessarily in agreement with terms or if you will structure of his contract. That’s the point of the negotiation. So you’re seeing a negotiation that’s going on and I’m a part of the negotiation on behalf of all the owners.”

Jason Garrett, Ezekiel Elliott To Discuss Lack Of Effort

Sep 19, 2017 7:50 AM

Jason Garrett will meet with Ezekiel Elliott to discuss the running back's lack of effort in two plays during Sunday's loss to the Denver Broncos.

On two interceptions by Dak Prescott, Elliott did not attempt to track down cornerbacks Chris Harris, Jr. and Aqib Talib. On the Harris interception, television replays showed Elliott standing with his hands on his hips as Harris turned up field.

On Talib's 103-yard return for a touchdown with 53 seconds to play, Elliott dove at a Denver blitzer to protect Prescott, but he was not seen in the television replays in the chase.

"One of the things we preach to our team on both sides of the ball when there is a turnover is everybody's involved," Garrett said. "If you're an offensive player, you become a defensive player on a fumble or an interception. Zeke is one of the most natural competitors that I've ever been around. He loves to play. He loves to practice. I think we've seen that through his first year playing, and those two plays are not indicative of the kind of competitor that he is, and we have to get [that] addressed."

Jerry Jones Blocking Contract Extension For Roger Goodell

Sep 18, 2017 1:54 PM

Jerry Jones has blocked the progress of contract negotiations on an extension for Roger Goodell.

"If not for Jerry," one person familiar with the contract negotiations said this weekend, "this deal would be done."

Some owners believe an extension for Goodell will eventually be agreed upon, but others aren't as sure now that Jones has interjected himself into the process.

Goodell's current deal expires in 2019 and was expected to have a deal done before the start of the season.

Jones has argued persistently for months to the committee that other owners believe Goodell makes "way too much money" and demands a pay cut and a radical change in the formula that compensates the commissioner.

Jones will be on a conference call this week with the compensation committee to discuss Goodell's salary.

Goodell has earned more than $200 million since he was elected commissioner in 2006.

"Jerry's not saying, 'Don't hire Roger.' He's saying, 'I hate this [proposed] deal; redo it,'" said one source.

Some owners believe Goodell's contributions to the NFL's success have been overstated.

"This is about money and a guy [Goodell] making way too much money on a grossly stupid contract for the job."

NFLPA Argues No Irreparable Harm If Ezekiel Elliott Plays

Sep 16, 2017 7:22 PM

The NFLPA argued that the NFL would not endure irreparable harm if Ezekiel Elliott continues to play while his six-game suspension plays out in the courts.

The NFLPA made its argument through a legal filing Saturday with the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, saying Elliott "stands to lose nearly half a season in a career that is notoriously short and precarious, and competitive opportunities are irretrievable once lost."

On Friday, the NFL asked the appeals court to overrule the Texas federal judge who granted a preliminary injunction of Elliott's suspension. The league is seeking a decision as early as Tuesday and as late as Sept. 26.

The NFL ultimately wants to get the case moved from Texas to the Southern District of New York. That was the venue for the league's successful appeal after a federal judge had overturned Tom Brady's four-game suspension in the Deflategate case.

The NFL believed Elliott used "physical force" three times in a span of five days in a Columbus, Ohio, apartment, resulting in injuries to Tiffany Thompson's face, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, wrists, hips and knees.

NFL Seeking Quick Reversal Of Ezekiel Elliott's Blocked Suspension

Sep 14, 2017 9:04 AM

The NFL is trying to speed up the timeline in its appeal of a federal judge's injunction that blocked Ezekiel Elliott's six-game suspension over a domestic violence case.

The NFL answered a filing from Elliott's attorneys Wednesday, telling a U.S. District Judge that the league would immediately go to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans if he didn't rule on its request for a stay of his injunction by Thursday.

Elliott, 22, was suspended by Roger Goodell last month, and attorneys representing Elliott for the NFL Players Association contended in a lawsuit that Elliott didn't get a fair hearing in an appeal that was denied.

The NFL has appealed the preliminary injunction granted to the NFLPA on the six-game suspension of Ezekiel Elliott.

With the injunction granted on Friday, Elliott likely will be able to continue playing as the legal process plays out.

Elliott ran for 104 yards on 24 carries in the Dallas Cowboys' Week 1 win over the Giants.

Arbitrator Upholds Six-Game Suspension For Ezekiel Elliott

Sep 6, 2017 1:06 PM

Arbitrator Harold Henderson upheld the six-game suspension on Tuesday.

Elliott, however, will be allowed to play in Week 1.

Elliott was away from the team last week, but took part in meetings and a walk-through last Saturday.

Elliott and the NFLPA are expected to continue to pursue legal action against the NFL.
