Cowboys Promote Rod Marinelli To Defensive Coordinator

Nov 2, 2014 12:43 AM

The Dallas Cowboys have promoted Rod Marinelli to become defensive coordinator, while keeping Monte Kiffin on the staff as assistant head coach/defense.

"Rod Marinelli's production in terms of creating turnovers and changing field position as a defensive coordinator is well documented." Jason Garrett said in the Cowboys' press release. "Monte Kiffin's overall knowledge and understanding of this defensive scheme will be put to use in mentoring all of the players and coaches on the defensive side of the ball. Monte was brought here to direct a transition in philosophy to the 4-3 scheme, and he will continue to oversee the development of our defense in this scheme."

Marinelli was defensive line coach of the Cowboys in 2013.

The Dallas Cowboys are discussing hiring Scott Linehan to become their playcaller on offense, which would be problematic with Bill Callahan already on the staff as offensive coordinator.

Callahan is under contract for the 2014 season.

Callahan could become offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns if Linehan is hired.

Cowboys Keeping Monte Kiffin As Defensive Coordinator

May 18, 2014 6:59 AM

The Dallas Cowboys have decided to retain defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.

The Cowboys fired Rex Ryan after the 2012 season and Kiffin's defense was even worse. The Cowboys gave up 27 points per game in 2013.

"I had a guy tell me one time how to be successful, that no human can be right over 50 percent of the time on any decision, but it's the ones that cut the bad ones off quick and let the good ones run long," Jones said, per The Dallas Morning News. "That's hard to do. That's hard to accept. We all know that adage of the gold miner who walked away and the other one who took one more swing, hit the pick and found the gold streak, and so you don't want to quit."

Jerry Jones In Favor Of Increasing Number Of Playoff Teams

Oct 11, 2014 3:51 AM

Jerry Jones is in favor of expanding the NFL playoffs as the Dallas Cowboys have missed the postseason for the fourth consecutive season.

"From the standpoint of looking at how exciting it is for a city or a community to be involved in the playoffs and the fact that you can have a team that might have literally operated at .500 or in that area ... you can have that team win the Super Bowl," Jones said Friday on 105.3 The Fan. "That makes a big case for adding a couple of more cities or communities that have NFL teams to the playoffs.

"It just creates that much more excitement and that much more interest for people in those communities. So I fall on the side of the ledger that would increase the playoffs."

Jones was answering a hypothetical question about adding two teams to the playoffs in each conference.
