Palmer To Join Parcells In Dallas

Aug 12, 2014 5:19 AM

Former Cleveland Browns head coach Chris Palmer, who most recently served as the Houston Texans' offensive coordinator, has agreed to join the Dallas Cowboys' staff. The exact title for Palmer, who agreed to a two-year contract, is unknown. Ostensibly, he replaces assistant head coach/passing game coordinator Sean Payton, who left Dallas two weeks ago to become the New Orleans Saints head coach. It is expected that Palmer will work with the Dallas quarterbacks and have major input into the passing game. Dallas is not expected to have an assistant with the title of offensive coordinator. Palmer, 56, will be reunited with quarterback Drew Bledsoe, with whom he worked four seasons (1993-96) with the New England Patriots. It will also be the second time in his career that Palmer will serve on a Bill Parcells-led staff. In addition, he will work closely with current Cowboys running game coordinator Tony Sparano, whom he coached in college at New Haven. Recently, Palmer met with Payton about the Saints' offensive coordinator position, and spoke to New York Jets officials about a similar job.

Nguyen To Retire Due To Neck Injury

Sep 6, 2014 10:26 AM

Dallas Cowboys coaches and officials are planning for next season as if inside linebacker Dat Nguyen, limited to eight games in 2005 because of a neck injury, is still planning to not be a part of it. Owner Jerry Jones reiterated at practices for this weekend's Senior Bowl college all-star game that Nguyen, who finished the 2005 season on injured reserve, will retire. Nguyen is expected to make his retirement official sometime after Super Bowl XL. Cowboys coach Bill Parcells first broached the subject of Nguyen's retirement in November. "Nothing has changed with [Nguyen's] situation," Jones said. A seven-year veteran, Nguyen, 30, led the Cowboys in tackles in 2001, 2003 and 2004. His career-best 172 tackles in 2001 represent the third-best single-season total in club history and, Nguyen averaged 132 tackles 2001-2004, despite playing just eight games in 2002 because of a broken wrist.

Cowboys Send Henson To Europe

Sep 23, 2014 12:24 AM

In an effort to accelerate the learning curve for Drew Henson, and to provide him "live" action that might permit the young quarterback to at least challenge for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, the Dallas Cowboys are sending the former University of Michigan standout to the NFL Europe League this spring. Henson will report next month to the NFLEL's training camp in Tampa. The season for the NFL-subsidized springtime league begins in mid-March. It has not been determined yet for which team Henson will play. The possibility of playing in Europe, where he will be able to get the snaps that he has not amassed in his first two NFL seasons, was broached to Henson by coach Bill Parcells late in the regular season. Henson responded well to the suggestion and has embraced the opportunity to hone his skills after not playing at all in a regular season game in 2005. He regards the stint abroad as a chance to solidify his vocation, not a European vacation.

Parcells Gets Two-Year Extension

Oct 2, 2014 5:11 PM

Bill Parcells is coming back for at least one more season with the Dallas Cowboys -- and maybe even two. The team announced Friday that Parcells agreed to a new contract through the 2007 season. "I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to continue what we have started here," Parcells said in a news release. "The Cowboys organization has been the fairest of fair to me, and hopefully I can repay them with an improved performance." Parcells, 64, had a year left on the four-year, $17 million contract he signed in January 2003. However, he left his three previous coaching jobs mid-contract and there was speculation he might do it again. The question diminished as this week went on and Parcells continued showing up at his office every day. Still, the announcement helps turn attention back to what the club will do to continue the turnaround that saw them go 9-7 after being 6-10 the previous year. "This is about continuity and building upon the pieces we have in place as an organization and as a football team," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "We aren't where we want to be at this point, but we're definitely moving in the right direction and feel very good about the future."

Dallas Could Call On Woodson If They Make Postseason

Sep 23, 2014 12:24 AM

Coach Bill Parcells has contacted Darren Woodson, telling the former Cowboys' safety to be ready to play if the team makes the NFL playoffs, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Saturday. The two are expected to talk again on Monday. The Cowboys play their final regular-season game against the Rams on Sunday night. Depth has become a concern for the Cowboys' secondary, with safety Roy Williams bothered by a sprained ankle. On Saturday, Woodson cleared waivers after the Cowboys released him from the reserve/retired list, clearing the way for his return. He cannot play against the Rams but could be eligible for the playoffs, should the Cowboys qualify. Woodson, 36, retired late in the 2004 season after he was unable to return from preseason back surgery. The Cowboys kept him on the physically unable to perform list, hoping he would be able to return, but he was unable to do so. It's not clear if he is in condition to play if called upon. "We'll see what happens because they are not in the playoffs just yet," Woodson, an ESPN analyst, told the Dallas Morning News. "Let's wait until Monday."
