Baker Mayfield Gets Testy In Exchange With Reporter

Oct 31, 2019 8:20 AM

Baker Mayfield got into a heated exchange with a reporter on Wednesday before walking out of his media availability.

The Cleveland Browns quarterback was asked if the team lacked urgency on a possession at the end of the first half during Sunday's 27-13 loss to the New England Patriots.

Mayfield interjected during a follow-up question.

"Stop saying 'but.' I just told you the clock was running and we had a penalty," Mayfield said to Tony Grossi, a reporter for 850 WKNR radio. "You want to give them the ball back? No. You don't play, you don't know it. That's just plain and simple."

Grossi then asked if Mayfield was happy with the way the drive ended.

"Was I happy with the drive? No, we didn't score points," Mayfield answered. "The dumbest question you could ask. What? Jesus, Tony."

Mayfield then walked away from the lectern.

Grossi said later on WKNR that it was not the first time he had been at odds with Mayfield this season.

Baker Mayfield Fined $12,500 For Criticizing Referees

Oct 19, 2019 4:12 PM

Baker Mayfield has been fined $12,500 for criticizing referees following the Cleveland Browns' loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Mayfield was asked about a blindside blocking penalty called on Jarvis Landry.

"The refs are never an excuse," Mayfield answered. "I will probably get fined for saying this, but it was pretty bad today. The guy is squared up with him, running at him and he is lowering his head into Jarvis. What is [Landry] supposed to do? Avoid him? This is not bull fighting. I don't know. It ticks me off."

The Cleveland Browns have refuted a report that they were listening to trade offers for Odell Beckham Jr.

The Browns acquired Beckham in the offseason from the New York Giants.

"That's fake news," said John Dorsey, using a well-worn pejorative.

Dorsey told ESPN he has not taken any trade calls on Beckham.

Video Shows Baker Mayfield Shaking Hands With Richard Sherman

Oct 9, 2019 9:52 AM

Richard Sherman claimed after Monday Night Football that Baker Mayfield refused to shake his hand at midfield during the pregame coin toss.

However, video evidence suggests otherwise.

One video shows Mayfield clearly embracing multiple San Francisco 49ers captains, including George Kittle. It also shows the Cleveland Browns quarterback shaking DeForest Buckner's hand.

There is also a grainy video that appears to show Mayfield and Sherman shaking hands.

Richard Sherman Calls Out Baker Mayfield For Handshake Snub

Oct 8, 2019 10:59 AM

Richard Sherman says Baker Mayfield refused to shake hands during the coin toss before Monday night's Cleveland Browns-San Francisco 49ers game.

"What's amazing, and annoying, was him not shaking hands at the beginning," Sherman said. "That's some college s---. It's ridiculous. We're all trying to get psyched up, but shaking hands with your opponent -- that's NFL etiquette. And when you pull bush league stuff, that's disrespectful to the game. And believe me, that's gonna get us fired up."

The 49ers routed the Browns 31-3. Sherman got some payback when he intercepted Mayfield on Cleveland's second offensive possession.

"Respect the game," Sherman said. "You can have rivals, but pay your respect in that moment -- especially when you're young.

"He hasn't earned anything in this league. How many games has he won? He's acting like he was the MVP last year. If (Patrick) Mahomes did that, it would be one thing. But he would never do that, because he has too much respect for the game.

"And when you see a guy who doesn't? You humble him every chance you get. Because eventually, he will have respect for the league -- or he'll be out of it."
