Baker Mayfield: Freddie Kitchens Was 'My Choice' To Coach Browns

Jan 31, 2019 8:12 AM

Baker Mayfield told SiriusXM's Mad Dog Sports Radio on Wednesday that Freddie Kitchens was who he would have hired as the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns if given the power.

"I believe in him," Mayfield said. "That's not to say anything about anybody else, but you know what? We had something special and I want to build on it."

The quarterback's comments were his first since the Browns gave Kitchens the job.

"I kind of had that sense the whole time," he said. "Seeing how he was, how he didn't change when he made the jump from running backs coach to offensive coordinator. Then just taking over and the difference that we had while he was calling plays. You know what, he had guys believing in him. When you have guys that believe in you as a head coach and respect you, there's going to be great things that happen."

Browns Blocking Interview Requests For Freddie Kitchens

Jan 4, 2019 8:39 AM

The Cleveland Browns have blocked several requests for vacant coordinator positions around the league because Freddie Kitchens remains under contract.

Kitchens is scheduled to interview with the Browns for the vacant head coaching job, which explains why they aren't willing to allow him to consider a lateral move.

If Kitchens isn't selected as Cleveland's head man, the organization wants the new hire to retain Kitchens.

Josh McDaniels 'Enthusiastically Interested' In Coaching Browns

Jan 4, 2019 5:39 PM

According to a report, Josh McDaniels is "enthusiastically interested" in the Cleveland Browns' head coaching vacancy.

The Browns have used "back channels" to indicate interest in McDaniels, but they've yet to request an interview with the New England Patriots' offensive coordinator.

If Cleveland doesn't interview McDaniels during the Patriots' bye week, they'll have to wait until the team's playoff run ends.

McDaniels agreed to become the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts last year, but changed his mind and pulled out to return to the Patriots.
