Bengals Sign Palmer To Deal Through 2014

Dec 10, 2014 11:34 PM

The Cincinnati Bengals reworked and extended Carson Palmer's contract on Thursday, giving themselves more salary cap flexibility and a chance to keep their franchise quarterback through 2014. By adding six years to a deal that could pay him $118.75 million, they also showed they're serious about winning for years to come. The Bengals have won the AFC North title and are preparing for their first playoff appearance in 15 years. "We've knocked down another one of those walls," coach Marvin Lewis said. Palmer won the Heisman Trophy at Southern California and was the first overall pick in 2003. His current contract had three more years. The Bengals approached Palmer's agent, David Dunn, about an extension a few months ago, indicating they wanted to keep him for the rest of his career. In only his second season as a starter, Palmer has led his team to the playoffs, set a franchise record for touchdown passes and made the Pro Bowl.

Bengals Comfortable With Johnson Running The Ball

Oct 10, 2014 4:33 PM

With Rudi Johnson carrying the ball more than he had all season, the Bengals ground out victory No. 10 on a wintry afternoon, showing their offense is more than a passing fancy. Cincinnati (10-3) won a game that it needed in a way it didn't expect. And it may have to do it again. A sprained ankle will sideline running back Chris Perry indefinitely, limiting the Bengals' options on third down. Perry walked around with a protective plastic boot on his left foot Monday, a bad omen. "He'll try to get back for the playoffs," Johnson said after a chat with Perry. For now, the Bengals will keep Perry on the roster and go with what they have in the backfield, hoping it's enough to clinch a playoff spot and keep them in the running for a first-round bye.

Perry Sprains Ankle In Close Win Over Browns

Oct 10, 2014 4:30 PM

Running back Chris Perry sprained his left ankle on a first-quarter run Sunday and was on crutches following the Bengals' 23-20 victory over the Cleveland Browns. Coach Marvin Lewis said the first tests on the ankle found no major injury. The club had no idea how long he might be sidelined. The second-year running back provides a change-up to starter Rudi Johnson, who is best at running between the tackles. Perry, a first-round draft pick last season, excels at catching the ball and getting outside on runs. Perry got into the game on the Bengals' second series against Cleveland, and carried on three straight plays. His ankle twisted on the third carry. "The foot got caught up under me," Perry said. "It's injured. I really can't say anything more about it. It's disappointing."

Big Ben Hurt Again

Oct 10, 2014 4:31 PM

Another week, another injury for Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger's right thumb injury "is pretty painful," he said Thursday, but the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback is hopeful it won't severely affect his throwing in Sunday's key AFC North game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The injury, not disclosed until Wednesday, follows injuries to both knees that kept Roethlisberger out of four games. Coach Bill Cowher also said Roethlisberger "tweaked" his ankle during a 26-7 loss to Indianapolis on Monday night, but that injury was not listed on the team's first injury report of the week. That report, issued late Wednesday afternoon, was the first disclosure of any thumb injury. Neither Roethlisberger nor Cowher mentioned it following the Colts' game.
