Ron Rivera: Cam Newton 'Rusty' But Looks Good Throwing

Jul 27, 2017 9:00 AM

Cam Newton is still rounding into form after undergoing rotator cuff surgery four months ago.

"I thought Cam looked very good," Ron Rivera said. "He looked a little rusty early on. His timing was off a little bit. But as he practiced more you could see he started to get comfortable back there.

"We do have him on a pitch count, obviously. He was a couple of throws under it, but he looked good."

Newton threw for 3,509 yards, 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions and had a 52.9 completion percentage in 15 games last season.

Panthers Fire Dave Gettleman As GM

Jul 18, 2017 11:38 AM

The Carolina Panthers have fired Dave Gettleman as general manager.

Gettleman had been general manager of the Panthers since 2013.

“After much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations, I have decided to relieve Dave Gettleman of his duties as general manager,” Richardson said. “I want to thank Dave for the role he played in our success over the past four seasons. While the timing of this decision is not ideal, a change is needed.”

Carolina finished 6-10 in 2016 after making the playoffs in each of Gettleman’s first three seasons with the team, capping 2015 with an NFC Championship.

Before joining Carolina, Gettleman spent nearly 30 years in NFL scouting departments. Overall, Gettleman has been a part of seven Super Bowl teams, including three winners. He was with Buffalo in 1990 and 1991, Denver in 1997, and the New York Giants in 2000, 2007 and 2011 before adding another appearance with Carolina in 2015. The Broncos, and 2007 and 2011 Giants won the championship. Gettleman has been associated with 16 playoff teams in his NFL career.

Gettleman's firing in the middle of July comes approximately one month after the Kansas City Chiefs parted ways with John Dorsey.

DeAngelo Williams Not Interested In Cowboys, Browns, Panthers, Jaguars

Jul 12, 2017 6:02 PM

DeAngelo Williams revealed he'd prefer not to play for the Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers or Jacksonville Jaguars.

Williams has been one of the NFL's most productive backup running backs over the past two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

While his reasons for not wanting to play for the Browns and Jaguars were business-related, they were purely personal regarding the Panthers and Cowboys.

Williams grew up as a fan of the San Francisco 49ers.

"My fandom for the team I was raised as will not allow me to go to the Cowboys," Williams told Schefter. "I'm an '80s baby ... and the 49ers ruled the '80s. The Cowboys somewhat did something in the '90s; I even refuse to give them that. ...

"The Cowboys, they win. They just don't ever show up during the playoffs. They always disappear in the playoffs. I've got a great depiction of the Cowboys' fan base. During the regular season last year, they were on cloud nine. You couldn't tell them anything because they were going to win the 'ship -- that's all they said. Fans just got extremely super annoying. Then, the minute they lose, they either got cheated, somebody was hurt -- the excuses start flowing. It's just amazing to me. That fan base just in general can't handle defeat. Still, to this day, they say that the Dez Bryant catch against the Green Bay Packers was a catch!"
