Bills Hire Sean McDermott As Head Coach

Jan 11, 2017 4:23 PM

The Buffalo Bills have agreed to hire Sean McDermott as head coach.

McDermott most recently was defensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers.

McDermott was one of four coaches to interview for the Bills' vacancy, along with interim coach Anthony Lynn, Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin and Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Kris Richard.

In recent days, sources said McDermott had received encouraging answers to his questions about the team's front-office structure and how it would work day-to-day if he took the job.

No Teams Finish 2016 In Top-10 In Both Offensive, Defensive DVOA

Jan 3, 2017 2:01 PM

The NFL has very few teams this season that excel in all facets of the game. Further evidence of this issue shows itself in the fact that there is only one team ranking in the top-10 in both Football Outsiders' Offensive and Defensive DVOA.

Last season, the Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs ranked in the top-10 on both sides of the ball.

The Chiefs were the closest team to finish in the top-10 in both Offensive and Defensive DVOA at 13th and 14th.

The New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys finished the season ranked first and second in both Total DVOA and Weighted DVOA.

Bills Owner Fired Rex Ryan When Pressed On Future

Jan 3, 2017 7:21 AM

Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula decided to fire Rex Ryan when the coach asked about his future beyond this season heading into the team's season finale.

"I was asked a point-blank question, and based on the discussions we've been having all year, I felt it was better to tell Rex we were going in a different direction," Pegula said.

In his season-ending news conference Monday, Doug Whaley denied having any involvement in Ryan's firing last week.

"We just finished our weekly phone conversation with Terry, myself and Rex," Whaley said of Ryan's firing last Tuesday. "Rex asked to speak to [Pegula] privately. After that, I was informed that Rex would no longer be our coach. I wasn't privy to the conversation so I cannot get into those details.

"I look at it this way: I'm the GM of the football operation. I was told by my boss that I would no longer be working with a certain person. My role is not to figure out why. My role is to take that information and go forward and put this organization in the best possible way to win football games. So for me, I did not ask."
