Jul 31, 2017 12:56 PM

The Baltimore Ravens have released David Olson and signed Josh Woodrum.

Woodrum will serve as the Ravens' No. 3 quarterback behind Ryan Mallett and Dustin Vaughan until Joe Flacco returns from a back injury.

On Sunday, Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said the team was still considering Colin Kaepernick and asked for fans to "pray for us."

Kaepernick remains a free agent.

Joe Flacco Endorses Ravens Signing Colin Kaepernick

Jul 29, 2017 11:21 AM

Joe Flacco is endorsing the idea of Colin Kaepernick joining the Baltimore Ravens.

"I would like to see Colin get back in [the NFL] and, at some point, maybe get another shot [to be a starter]," said Flacco, who hasn't spoken to Kaepernick about it. "I wouldn't like that to be here. I do not want him to get another shot [to be a starter] here, but yes, he can come here and have some fun. I think it would be a good spot for him."

Flacco and Kaepernick faced off in Super Bowl XLVII.

Kaepernick is considered the best available quarterback remaining in free agency.

Ravens Sign Arena League QB David Olson

Jul 28, 2017 10:14 AM

The Baltimore Ravens have signed David Olson following the injury to Joe Flacco.

Baltimore used offensive assistant coach Matt Weiss to line up under center and hand off to running backs in drills.

Olson will help spell Ryan Mallett, who has taken Flacco's spot with the first-team offense, and Dustin Vaughan, who is on his fourth team in four seasons.

The Ravens also have interest in Colin Kaepernick.

The agreement with Olson would not preclude the Ravens from adding Kaepernick.

Olson most recently played in the Champions Indoor Football league.

John Urschel Retiring From NFL To Focus On MIT Studies

Jul 27, 2017 10:00 AM

John Urschel is retiring from the NFL after three seasons.

“This morning John Urschel informed me of his decision to retire from football,” John Harbaugh said in a statement. “We respect John and respect his decision. We appreciate his efforts over the past three years and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Urschel is currently a Ph.D. candidate in mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

In an article written for the Players’ Tribune in 2015, entitled “Why I Still Play Football,” Urschel starts the piece by saying “I envy Chris Borland.” Borland retired at 24 years old due to concerns about long-term brain injury.

A fifth-round pick in 2014 out of Penn State, Urschel has suited up at guard and center for 42 games and started 15, including two playoff games in 2014.

Kenneth Dixon is out for the entire 2017 season with a torn meniscus.

Dixon decided to have his medial meniscus repaired.

Dixon was set to miss the first four games for violating the league’s performance enhancing drug policy.

The Baltimore Ravens already agreed to terms with Bobby Rainey to take Dixon’s place in camp. Terrance West and Danny Woodhead are the team’s top running backs.

Ravens Partner With Tech Firm To Practice Against Holographic Players

Jul 20, 2017 12:40 PM

The Baltimore Ravens have partnered with a tech company to practice against holographic players.

“Right now, what you are seeing is a holographic football team coming at you and getting into their formation,” says Jim Pietila, CEO of Mixed River.

Founded late last year, Mixed River offers not virtual reality but “mixed reality,” which means the real world intersects with images or data.

Virtual reality also could help reduce head trauma injuries, which are under increasing scrutiny by former players and the league.

“One of the attractions to the technology is the ability to get those mental reps that don’t involve contact,” said Damani Leech, the NFL’s vice president for football strategy and business development. “I think you see it with other technology — with the robotic tackling dummies to allow you to improve your tackling form without hitting another person.”
