A return to the Kansas City Chiefs was widely rumored for Tony Gonzalez, but a trade never came close to reality.

The Atlanta Falcons are virtually out of playoff contention, but a low-round draft pick for Gonzalez wouldn't have been worth it in leaving Matt Ryan without another reliable receiver.

Gonzalez plans on retiring at the end of the season.

Tony Gonzalez is open to a trade from the Atlanta Falcons, but the team has no interest in dealing him.

"Everybody out there needs to understand that I'm not naive to it," Gonzalez told ESPN.com. "I see it, too. This is the last (nine) weeks of my career. And right now, things are looking ... you never know.

"But, like I said, I love my guys on this team too much to go ask for a trade. It would be something that would come from them where they said, 'Hey, it makes sense because we could get something good for you and send you to a team that's a contender.' So I understand the thought process behind that."

The Falcons have a 2-5 record and are without Julio Jones for the rest of the season.

Julio Jones will miss the remainder of the 2013 NFL season with a fractured foot.

Jones will undergo surgery next week.

With the Atlanta Falcons reeling with several important injuries and a 2-3 record, Tony Gonzalez does not want to be traded before the deadline.

The Falcons are not giving up on the season and want to keep Gonzalez.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been mentioned as a possible trading partner for Gonzalez, considering their 5-0 record and his history with the franchise.

The Atlanta Falcons fear Julio Jones will miss the remainder of the season with a foot injury. Jones reportedly broke the screw that was put in his foot in 2011.

The Falcons are hopeful a second opinion will change the prognosis, but they are not optimistic.

Jones has 41 receptions for 580 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Jones was seen limping out of the training room on Monday after the Falcons' 28-30 loss to the New York Jets.

Tony Gonzalez is sticking by his intention to make 2013 his final season in the NFL.

"No. No, you can’t keep chasing it" Gonzalez said Friday. "I’ve chased it long enough and I’ve tried long enough. I think I’ve chased it three or four years longer than I thought I would. This is it. And I’m going to enjoy it no matter what happens." 

Gonzalez continues to be one of the NFL's most productive tight ends with 149 receiving yards on 12 catches last week against the New England Patriots.
