Risdon's NFL Season Previews, Version 2.0

Sep 17, 2014 10:48 AM

Few insiders know the NFL better than RealGM's Jeff Risdon, who is 21 teams into his team-by-team season previews. Click on the links below for the most in depth and readable previews anywhere. - Oakland Raiders The Raiders are a tough cloud to forecast. There is a great deal of potential here on defense and with JaMarcus Russell and the running backs, but it's tough to give them the benefit of doubt until they prove it. - New York Giants The Giants have some question marks on offense, but their defense has the potential to be special. - Cincinnati Bengals The return of Carson Palmer and upgrades to the OL should fix the offense, but there are still legit questions. The defense is loaded with young talent, but it must continue to develop and make plays. - Indianapolis Colts If it wasn't for Peyton Manning, the Colts would have a difficult time dealing with an overhauled coaching staff and the loss of Marvin Harrison. - Philadelphia Eagles Many are high on the Eagles heading into the season, but Jeff points out that a lot will have to fall in place for them to piece together another playoff run. - Kansas City Chiefs The Chiefs are in the middle of a massive rebuild, and they may regret getting rid of Tony Gonzalez. - San Diego Chargers If their injured stars are healthy, the AFC road to Miami will probably go through San Diego. - Atlanta Falcons The Falcons are for real, but a tough schedule could keep them from making their second consecutive playoff appearance. - New York Jets The 2009 season might not go as planned, but the future is bright for the Jets with Mark Sanchez at quarterback. - Seattle Seahawks There are a lot of question marks regarding Seattle's health and depth on the offensive line, but a return to the playoffs is possible. - New Orleans Saints Reggie Bush isn't going to be the running back many want him to be, but he's still one of the most dangerous players in the game. Keep checking in daily as Risdon takes us on a tour around the NFL. - Click here to read Version 1.0 of Risdon's NFL Season Previews

Turner Not Fearing 370 Curse

May 27, 2014 5:00 AM

Michael Turner has been frequently associated with the dreaded curse of the 370. ?I?m not thinking about the 370 thing,? Turner said. ?I just have to be ready when my number is called.? The stat was ?discovered? by Football Outsiders founder Aaron Schatz in 2004. Running backs who rush for more than 370 carries in a season will either have a significant decline or get hurt the following season. Only one running back, Eric Dickerson, has been able to beat the curse. In 1983, Dickerson rushed for 1,808 yards on 390 carries as a rookie. He followed that season up with 2,105 yards on 379 carries. The Falcons are aware of the ?curse,? but don?t plan to change their strategy because of it. ?We?re not counting,? Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey said. ?When we need a run and we need yards, I?m going to call Michael Turner?s number.?

Falcons: White's Holdout Won't Be A Distraction

Sep 27, 2014 7:28 AM

Falcons wide receiver Roddy White is holding out for a better contract, but the team isn't concerned about it being a distraction. He is in the final year of a five-year, $7.35 million deal and is due $2.28 million this season. "I'm confident things are going to get done, and they are going to work in the best interest of both the club and Roddy," Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I truly believe it's something that won't be contentious. It's about two parties working together in a fair and firm fashion." White will be fined $15,888 for each day he misses camp. "I want to state that I'm not angry," coach Mike Smith said. "How can you be angry on the first day of training camp, the first day of the 2009 season. ... I don't believe it will be a distraction. You can't concern yourself with guys that aren't here. All we can do is coach the guys that are here. Our job as a coaching staff is to prepare our team for 2009."

Roddy White Begins Holdout

Aug 22, 2014 4:49 AM

Roddy White did not attend Friday's team meeting. White was scheduled to report by 6:30 p.m., but he was not there, according to his agent. Players not present for the first meeting are considered ?holdouts.? A player holding out will be fined $17,000 per day, as determined by the collective bargaining agreement. The Falcons have been in discussions with White?s representative, Jonathan Feinsod, about a contract extension. He confirmed that White wasn?t at the meeting but said ?no comment? when asked to elaborate. White held out for six days during his rookie season after being drafted out of UAB.
