Rookie CB Could Start For Atlanta

Falcons rookie cornerback Chris Owens has a chance to win a starting job with the team. Brent Grimes, Chevis Jackson, Von Hutchins and Owens will compete for the starting right corner job in the wake of Domonique Foxworth's free agent departure. Sources claim that Falcons coach Mike Smith would be pleased if Owens, a third-round pick, stepped up and beat out the veterans for the job.

Falcons OL Free On Bond After Facebook Fight

Falcons offensive lineman Quinn Ojinnaka is free on bond after being accused of fighting with his wife over Facebook. Ojinnaka was charged with simple battery, according to police in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Police said Ojinnaka's wife confronted him about contact with a female friend on Facebook, and he tossed her down some stairs.

Falcons' owner Arthur Blank released the following statement in regards to Michael Vick's release from prison. ?As Michael nears the completion of his sentence, I wish the best for him and his family. It is my sincere hope that he has learned from his mistakes and will move forward in a productive and positive manner. ?The Falcons maintain Michael?s contractual rights for now, but he will not be playing for us in the future. In the event NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell decides to reinstate Michael to the NFL, we feel his best opportunity to re-engage his football career would be at another club. ?From a personal standpoint; I will continue to be supportive of Michael in any way that would be positive, constructive and helpful.?

Vick Will Worry About Family First, Then Football

Michael Vick "will place football on the back burner" during his immediate home confinement and that there are no meetings scheduled with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to discuss reinstatement for the 2009 season, according to his agent. "Michael's looking forward to reacquainting himself with his family, his fiance, Kiafa, his children and his mom," Joel Segal, Vick's agent, said. "When he gets home, that's his priority, along with re-inserting himself into society and being a positive influence in his community. This is going to be a special time for him, just being around family."

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan isn't worried about a sophomore slump, as he eyes a division title for the club this season. "Last year you were just trying to keep your head above water," Ryan said Sunday. "I certainly don't want to sound like I have it all figured out ? because I don't ? but this year it's more about fine-tuning." With a year in the NFL under his belt, Ryan is setting his sights high for Atlanta. "It's the same as last year: We're not worried about outside expectations. But we want to win our division and give ourselves a chance. That's it. There are no personal goals."

Parker Wilson Hoping For Chance With Falcons

Former Alabama quarterback John Parker Wilson, who went undrafted, is hoping for a chance with the Falcons. Wilson threw a few passes to new Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez during a workout on Sunday, and feels as though he got himself noticed. "I feel really good," Wilson said. "I'm just coming in here trying to learn as much as I can right now. Take what I learn in the room and bring it out on the field." Wilson is currently fourth on Atlanta's depth chart, behind Matt Ryan, Chris Redman and D.J. Shockley. "I didn't really have any expectations going in. I would've liked to have been drafted, but ended up here, so I'm happy," he said. "I couldn't be more happy. The draft didn't work out, but I'm here and trying to make the best of it."

Falcons, White Working On Contract Extension

The Falcons and wide receiver Roddy White are discussing a contract extension after two successful seasons. White made his first Pro Bowl in 2008, and is entering the final season of a five-year pact. "We haven't come to an agreement," said White, who would like to begin the season with a new contract finalized. He is scheduled to make $2.28 million under his current deal. "Whenever it happens, it happens," White said. "We'll just wait around for it."

Falcons' Jerry Has Sprained Knee

Falcons rookie defensive tackle Peria Jerry suffered a sprained knee during the team's morning practice on Saturday. The team is expected to look at Jerry's knee again on Sunday, but reports on Saturday night indicated a sprain. "That's all we know right now," coach Mike Smith said. In 2008, Jerry underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in the same knee he sprained Saturday.

Falcons defensive tackle Peria Jerry, the team's first-round pick, did not practice in the team's evening practice after banging his knee with another player on Saturday morning. Jerry left the field under his own power. "He got banged up," Atlanta coach Mike Smith said. "We don't know anything about it. He bumped knees, and we'll know something by the end of the day. They took him in the training room to ice him."

Falcons' Ryan Eyeing TE Gonzalez As Target

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is having trouble containing his excitement about addition of tight end Tony Gonzalez. Friday marked the first day that Ryan was able to connect with his new tight end. "Well, yeah, certainly as a quarterback, any time you get a new toy, you want to try it out," Ryan said. "I threw a couple of balls his way, and he didn't disappoint." Gonzalez is the NFL's career leader in catches, yards receiving and touchdown catches for a tight end. "It's big for us to pick up Tony," Ryan said. "He's one of the greatest players of all time, so [adding] him to your team helps you improve. He's done a great job since he's been here the last couple of weeks, working hard in the weight room. I've been very impressed."
