Could Ryan Start In Week One?

Oct 13, 2014 2:49 AM

Some believe that Falcons' rookie quarterback Matt Ryan could start in Week One, according to Pro Football Weekly. "For the most part I feel comfortable with the concepts we are using for the passing game and the protection schemes," Ryan said of the team's playbook. "It?s just terminology ? you have to translate what you know into a different language. That?s the process I am going through right now." It hasn't taken Ryan long to make his presence felt on the practice field. "He has a presence already, and I don?t think he?s waiting to have some success on the field to grab these guys? respect. I have not seen him be intimidated by the speed and the names in this game right now. He?s very focused. And some of the things he has said in the huddle on top of the play call as far as direct to players, what to do, I have been impressed with it," Offensive Coordinator Mike Mularkey said. Mularkey says that Ryan will compete with holdovers Chris Redman and Joey Harrington for the starting gig in Week One against Detroit, but there are some in the Falcons? facility who feel Ryan will be the guy from Day One.

Ryan Understands Goodell's Opinion

Atlanta rookie quarterback Matt Ryan understands NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's opinion on lucrative rookie contracts, according to The Associated Press. Goodell recently stated that he felt the deals were getting out of control. "You can also understand the other side of it, the concern of veterans who have been in the league 10, 12 years and proven themselves but not seen the money," Ryan said Tuesday. "I can understand both sides." Ryan signed a $72 million, six-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons that included $34.75 million in guaranteed pay shortly after being taken with the third overall pick in this April's draft.
