Mora Signs Extension Through 2009

Sep 25, 2014 4:14 AM

Jim Mora wants to spend the rest of his coaching career with the Atlanta Falcons. The team is committed to him for at least four more seasons. Despite a second-half collapse that ruined a shot at the playoffs, the Falcons gave Mora a three-year contract extension Friday that runs through the 2009 season. "My family and I love it here," Mora said in a telephone interview from his home. "Our business is a little bit nomadic at times. We'd like to stay here as long as we can. I appreciate the confidence they have shown in me."

Abraham To Atlanta

May 19, 2014 2:59 AM

Disgruntled defensive end John Abraham may finally have been traded to the team he was hoping, albeit not in the trade route that was expected. FOXSports.com has learned that the Falcons, Broncos and Jets swung a three-way trade Tuesday in order to make the deal happen that would get Abraham to the Falcons. The deal has been approved by the league, but the parties are all waiting for the Jets to sign the trade papers and make it official. In the trade, the Falcons send their first-round pick (No. 15 overall) to the Broncos, and Denver turns around and sends its first-round pick (No. 29) and a third-rounder in this year's draft plus a fourth-round pick in 2007 to Atlanta. The Falcons then send that 29th overall pick in the draft to the Jets for Abraham. The Jets thus receive a draft pick two slots higher in the first round than the Seahawks were able to offer in their quest to land Abraham.

Abraham Has Mind Set On Atlanta

Sep 25, 2014 4:14 AM

John Abraham, embroiled in an acrimonious staredown with the Jets, has his mind "set" on playing with the Falcons, according to a source close to the disgruntled defensive end. Abraham, who's dug his heels in the sand on this, has no intention at the moment of negotiating with the Seahawks on a contract, because he's already agreed to terms to his liking with Atlanta and he wants to play in Atlanta. The source said that Abraham is "not happy" with the state of this fiasco. Essentially, Abraham simply wants this thing to be done, getting him out of New York and into Atlanta, which is close to his home in South Carolina. The source said there have been no developments over the weekend regarding the Falcons improving their offer to the Jets in a trade for Abraham or with the Seahawks.

Safety Lawyer Milloy agreed to terms with the Atlanta Falcons Friday on a three-year contract worth more than $6 million, including a $2.5 million signing bonus, according to Kevin Poston, one of his agents. The four-time Pro Bowler was released by Buffalo two weeks ago, a move that saved the Bills $3.75 million against the cap next season in the final year of Milloy's four-year contract.

Jets-Falcons Discuss Abraham Trade

Jun 18, 2014 12:45 AM

The Atlanta Falcons are working hard to assemble the appropriate pieces of a trade package intended to lure prized defensive end John Abraham from the New York Jets, ESPN and ESPN.com have confirmed through league sources. One significant road bump to a deal that, despite ongoing efforts from both sides, remains a long shot: The Falcons steadfastly refuse to include two-year veteran quarterback Matt Schaub, the player Jets officials regard as the centerpiece to any deal, in their trade proposals. It is believed the Jets are seeking Schaub and the Falcons' second-round draft pick for Abraham. Without the inclusion of Schaub, the backup to Michael Vick and a youngster whose r?sum? includes just two regular-season starts, the swap might never be consummated. But Atlanta in particular continues to pursue it and hopes to craft a package that might attract the Jets, but without having to surrender Schaub or the Falcons' first-round draft choice, the 15th overall selection in the lottery. "There have been discussions, as in plural, but I don't know that it will happen," said one team official. "But [the two teams] are still plugging away."

Falcons Guarantee Bonus To Vick, Creating Cap Space

Aug 4, 2014 7:03 PM

As anticipated, the Atlanta Falcons have guaranteed a $7 million March roster bonus due quarterback Michael Vick, a move that creates about $5.25 million in additional cap space, and which will help the club squeeze under the NFL's spending limit of $94.5 million by the Thursday night deadline. The contract extension signed by Vick in December 2004 provided the Falcons the right to make the move, which essentially turns the roster bonus into a signing bonus. Most important to the Falcons, it means that the team can prorate the $7 million bonus over four years and reduce its impact on the 2006 cap. Atlanta performed a similar maneuver last spring with Vick on a $22.5 million roster bonus. The bookkeeping transaction has no impact on Vick, since he would have received the $7 million whether it was treated as a roster bonus or as a signing bonus. The five-year veteran and Pro Bowl performer is due to earn a 2006 base salary of $1.4 million.
