James Harrison Re-Signs With Steelers, Three Weeks After Retiring

Sep 25, 2014 7:13 AM

James Harris has signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers just three weeks after retiring.

The Steelers suddenly had a need at linebacker due to the injury to Jarvis Jones.

Arthur Moats will start for Jones with Harrison becoming Pittsburgh's primary backup at outside linebacker.

The Steelers released Harrison in 2013 when the two sides could not agree on a pay cut, and he signed a two-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Saints Sign Robert Meachem

Sep 10, 2014 10:31 AM

Robert Meachem has re-signed with the New Orleans Saints four days after he was released.

Sean Payton said there was "no deal" in place to bring Meachem back. But he said the Saints' familiarity with Meachem obviously kept him in their plans as they continued to tweak their roster throughout the week, and they were fortunate he remained available.

Returning starter Kenny Stills' status is uncertain after he dealt with a nagging quad injury in the preseason. The Saints also have receivers Marques Colston, Brandin Cooks, Joe Morgan and Nick Toon at their disposal.

J.J. Watt, Texans Agree Upon $100M Extension

Sep 11, 2014 3:43 PM

J.J. Watt and the Houston Texans have agreed upon a six-year contract extension worth as much as $100 million.

The deal, which affects the final two seasons of his current contract and keeps him with the Texans through the 2021 season, will pay Watt a guaranteed $51.8 million, the most for a defensive player in NFL history. The $16.6 million annual value also is the highest for a defensive player.

He said in August that he hoped he had earned a new contract.

"With the new [collective bargaining agreement], I think one of the goals was to make guys earn their pay," Watt said. "No more big paydays up front. Make guys go out there and play, show that they've earned it.

"So I think when a team gives a big contract after the third year, they're saying, 'Listen, we think you've earned this.' I don't know if [the Texans] feel that way or not, but I sure hope I've put in all the work, and I've put in everything I can do to hopefully earn it."

Watt has been widely considered the best defensive player in the NFL over the past two seasons.
