The Dallas Cowboys have re-signed Anthony Spencer to a deal that could be worth as much as $3.5 million in 2014.
After receiving the franchise tag for the second consecutive year in 2013, Spencer played in only one game before undergoing microfracture surgery to repair articular cartilage damage in his left knee last October.
A 2007 first-round draft pick, Spencer is now the most-tenured member of the defensive line.
The Carolina Panthers have picked up the fifth-year option on the contract of Cam Newton.
Under the CBA, Newton will be entitled to the average of the league's 10 highest paid quarterbacks in 2015. That estimate comes out at $14.67 million. The Panthers likely won't get to the fifth year of Newton's contract as they remain set on signing him to a long-term deal.

Johnson last played in the NFL during the 2011 season with the New England Patriots.

"I've always been a big fan of the Jets," Johnson told the team's official website. "There was some thought into this, but just at the end of the day, I was comfortable here. I just felt like it was the right situation."
Johnson averaged just 3.9 yards per carry in 2013.
The New York Giants have agreed upon a one-year deal with Josh Freeman.
