The Browns have re-signed D'Qwell Jackson to a five-year contract.
The linebacker will earn $42.5 million over the life of the deal and it includes $19 million in guaranteed money and roster bonuses, according to a league source.
Jackson would have received $8.8 million under the franchise tag, which would nearly double his $4.5 million salary from last season.

Oakland Signs Brandon Underwood
The Raiders have signed former Packers defensive back Brandon Underwood.
Green Bay released Underwood in September following his arrest related to a physical altercation with his wife.
Underwood, who also was slowed by a knee injury during last year's training camp, is the first former Packer to head to Oakland under new general manager Reggie McKenzie, who spent 18 years in Green Bay.
Broncos Sign Jason Hill
The Broncos have signed free agent wide receiver Jason Hill.
The sixth-year pro has played for Jacksonville and San Francisco, which selected him in the third round of the 2007 draft out of Washington State.
CFL Star Jerome Messam Signs With Dolphins
Running back Jerome Messam, a 1,000-yard rusher in the Canadian Football League last year, has signed with the Dolphins.
The Canadian Press reported that Messam signed a three-year deal.

The Dolphins have signed running back Jerome Messam.
Messam enjoyed a breakthrough season with the Canadian Football League's Edmonton Eskimos in 2011. He won the CFL's Most Outstanding Canadian back in November.
"Yes, it's true. Jeff Ireland (Dolphins general manager) phoned me late afternoon and said they had decided to offer Jerome a contract, but their proposal would not include a signing bonus," Eskimos general manager Eric Tillman said.
"We weren't positive that proposal would be accepted, but in the past couple of hours, Darren Gill, Jerome's agent, confirmed they had discussed the situation and would be accepting the offer from Miami.
"Obviously, Jerome departs with our best wishes and our focus immediately shifts to free agency as a terrific opportunity to improve our club in the coming days."
Seahawks To Re-Sign Breno Giacomini
The Seahawks and free agent offensive lineman Breno Giacomini have agreed to a two-year contract extension.
According to the NFL Players Association website, Giacomini will make $1.5 million in base salary for the 2012 season and $3 million in 2013.
Giacomini played in 15 games and made eight starts on the Seahawks offensive line last season, filling in at a variety of spots.
Bucs Hire Mike Sullivan To Coach Offense
The Buccaneers hired former Giants quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan as their offensive coordinator Friday.
Sullivan joins the staff of new coach Greg Schiano, who was hired in late January from Rutgers, replacing the fired Raheem Morris.
"We are very fortunate to add someone like Mike Sullivan to lead our offensive coaching staff," said Schiano in a statement.
49ers Renew GM Baalke's Contract
The 49ers have confidence in Trent Baalke leading them for the long haul.
The GM on Friday received a three-year contract extension through the 2016 season.
Jets Re-Sign Turner To One-Year Deal
The Jets have re-signed Patrick Turner to a one-year contract, according to a source.
The deal is worth $875,000, including a $250,000 signing bonus.
Turner, 24, was scheduled to become a restricted free agent next month.
A former college teammate of quarterback Mark Sanchez at Southern California, Turner had eight catches for 96 yards and a touchdown last season.
Patriots Re-Sign Underwood After Pre-Super Bowl Cut
The Patriots have re-signed Tiquan Underwood, who they cut the night before Super Bowl XLVI.
A source claimed at the time of Underwood's release that it was purely a football decision based New England's needs for their matchup against New York.
After releasing Underwood, the Patriots promoted defensive lineman Alex Silvestro off their practice squad. Silvestro was active for the Super Bowl but did not play any defensive snaps.
A third-year receiver, Underwood played in eight games for the team: six in the regular season, two in the playoffs.
