Patten played in 60 total games for New England from 2001-2004 and caught a touchdown pass from Tom Brady in the team's upset of the Rams in the 2002 Super Bowl.
His 91-yard touchdown reception from Brady at Indianapolis on Oct. 21, 2001, remains the longest pass play in team history.

The Jets have signed kicker Nick Folk to a one-year deal.
Jay Feely is set to become an unrestricted free agent.
Folk worked out for both the Jets and Giants.
Bears Sign TE Angulo, WR Peterman
The Bears have agreed to one-year deals with Richard Angulo and wide receiver Eric Peterman.
Angulo has 17 receptions for 155 yards and a touchdown in 27 games with St. Louis, Minnesota and Jacksonville in his career.
Peterman, an undrafted free agent from Northwestern, spent the preseason with the Bears and final week of last season on their practice squad.
Jaguars Re-Sign Wilford To Minimum Deal
The Jaguars have re-signed veteran tight end Ernest Wilford to a one-year deal worth $630,000.
Wilford would have become an unrestricted free agent next week.
He is expected to play a backup role to starter Marcedes Lewis and second-year player Zach Miller.
Jaguars Re-Sign Troy Williamson
The Jaguars have re-signed wide receiver Troy Williamson, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Williamson, who would have been a restricted free agent, decided against hitting the market.

The Oakland Raiders and Sebastian Janikowski reached agreement Tuesday morning on the richest kicking contract in NFL history, according to league sources.
Janikowski will sign a four-year, $16 million contract that includes $9 million in guaranteed money, sources said.
Seahawks Sign Punter Tom Malone
The Seahawks have signed punter Tom Malone, according to the player's agent.
Malone attended USC beginning in 2002, punting for Pete Carroll, who is now the Seahawks coach.
Seahawks Sign CFL Sack Leader
The Seahawks have signed CFL sack leader Rick Foley to a contract.
Foley turned down offers from the Eagles and Rams to sign with Seattle.
"New team, new coach, new defense and new position in their defense," Foley told The Province. "Nobody has an advantage going into camp."
Foley was signed by the Ravens in 2006 but never got into a game.
Bengals Sign Rayner, Graham May Be Done
The Bengals signed kicker Dave Rayner after a tryout on Friday, which may spell the end for Shayne Graham in Cincinnati.
Graham's franchise tag number is close to $3 million.
"It's going to be an ongoing evaluation where we are going to bring some free agents in and see where Shayne falls in comparison to them," special teams coach Darrin Simmons said before Rayner was signed.
"We'll also have to see the likelihood of signing a free agent or possibly getting a kicker in the draft and going that route."
Falcons Sign Finneran To Extension
The Falcons and wide receiver Brian Finneran have agreed to terms on a contract extension.
Finneran, 34, caught 11 passes for 111 yards in 10 games in 2009.
