Chiefs Sign John Carney

Jul 3, 2014 4:40 PM

Kansas City Chiefs' President Carl Peterson announced on Tuesday that the club has agreed to terms of a one-year contract with veteran free agent K John Carney. As per Chiefs' policy, no other terms of the agreement were made available. ?With the results of our offense, it calls to find a very experienced and accurate field goal kicker,? Peterson commented. ?John Carney fits that description, and we?ve admired his performance over many years in the NFL.?

Broncos Pad Backfield By Adding FB Johnson

Sep 13, 2014 6:06 PM

Broncos' fullback Kyle Johnson had his Thanksgiving plans all set when he suddenly had to cancel. Not that he minded. The Broncos called him Wednesday morning in New Jersey to see if he was available, and he was signed and at practice by Thursday. Denver released guard Isaac Snell to make room for Johnson on the roster. Johnson, who was waived by the Broncos on Sept. 1, thought he could get up to speed by Sunday's game at Chicago. He's been working out back home and keeping an eye on what was happening with Denver. Although, he couldn't bring himself to watch NFL games on Sunday. "Emotionally, it was difficult for me," Johnson said. "It was too hard."

Titans Sign WR Mike Williams

Oct 31, 2014 9:16 PM

Former first-round wide receiver Mike Williams, the 10th overall choice in the 2005 draft but a disappointment with two different franchises during less than three full seasons in the NFL, will get a third chance to prove himself. Williams on Thursday signed with the Tennessee Titans, who had auditioned him a few weeks ago, and who apparently feel that the former Southern California star can still fulfill his big-time potential. The move reunites Williams with former USC Offensive Coordinator Norm Chow, who holds the same position with the Titans and who team officials hope can motivate the wide receiver. The Oakland Raiders, who acquired Williams from the Detroit Lions on the second day of this year's draft, released him on Oct. 30.

49ers Re-Hire Tollner To Assist Miserable Offense

Oct 15, 2014 6:46 PM

Ted Tollner rejoined the 49ers as an assistant coach Tuesday in an effort to spark the club's miserable offense. Tollner, the former USC and San Diego State coach, also is a longtime NFL assistant who served on the 49ers' coaching staff from 2002-04, with two years as quarterbacks' coach and one season as offensive coordinator. He was the Lions' offensive coordinator for part of the 2005 season.

With Freeney Hurt, Colts Claim Rice

Aug 8, 2014 11:33 AM

With the status of three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney uncertain, the Indianapolis Colts have claimed Simeon Rice off waivers after he was released by the Denver Broncos last Friday. Freeney injured his left foot in the fourth quarter of Sunday night's 23-21 loss at San Diego and was undergoing tests on Monday to determine the extent of the damage. Freeney, who was carted from the field after an unidentified Chargers' offensive lineman rolled up his leg, likely will miss next Sunday's game against Kansas City. Rice, 34, was let go by the Broncos on Friday afternoon after he requested his release. The league's second-leading active sacker, Rice appeared in six games during his short-lived stint with the Broncos but was unhappy over his lack of playing time and the fact that Denver coaches were using him at the unfamiliar left end position.

Vikings Sign QB Koy Detmer

Dec 13, 2014 4:55 AM

With only one healthy quarterback on the roster and unsure about the availability of starter Tarvaris Jackson for Sunday's game, the Minnesota Vikings signed veteran free agent Koy Detmer to a one-year contract on Tuesday. Detmer, 34, played his entire 10-year career in Philadelphia, where Minnesota coach Brad Childress was the onetime offensive coordinator. The offensive system used by the Vikings is similar to the one in which Detmer played with the Eagles. Jackson suffered a concussion in Sunday's victory over the San Diego Chargers, and his status for this week's game at Green Bay is uncertain. His primary backup Kelly Holcomb, who has started three games because of previous injuries to Jackson, is himself recovering from a neck injury. If neither Jackson nor Holcomb can play against the Packers, five-year veteran Brooks Bollinger would get his first start of the season. Detmer, who should be able to pick up the offense quickly, would probably then serve as the backup.

Packers Sign TE Lee To Extension

Nov 9, 2014 7:16 PM

Not long after Green Bay Packers' tight end Donald Lee caught a 48-yard pass from Brett Favre with about 3:30 left in the second quarter Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, Vice President Andrew Brandt saw an e-mail pop into his in-box. "Are you sure you don't want to get this deal done?" the message read. It was from Brian Levy, one of Lee's agents, who had been working with Brandt on a contract extension for the pending unrestricted free agent since Thursday evening. Both sides made sure Lee will get the chance to continue doing that through 2011 in a Packers' uniform as he signed a four-year contract extension worth $11.88 million on Monday. "I hope I can play for the Packers for the rest of my life," Lee said by telephone later in the afternoon. "I love it here. It's been like home."
