The Las Vegas Raiders raised eyebrows when they selected Alabama offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood with the 17th overall pick on Thursday night.

"We knew it would be controversial," Mike Mayock said. "We completely understand that."

Mayock said Jon Gruden, offensive line coach Tom Cable and the team's scouts were high on Leatherwood too.

"Coach Cable has been all over him for months now," Mayock said. "Gruden loved this guy. Our scouts loved this guy. And what I like is, when the second floor in our building, which is all the coaches, and the third floor, which is all the scouts, when we’re united on a conversation like Leatherwood, that makes me feel really good about the pick."

The New York Jets traded up to acquire the 14th overall pick in Thursday's first round.

New York used the pick on USC offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker to help protect second overall selection Zach Wilson.

In addition to the 14th pick, the Jets acquired a fourth-round pick from the Minnesota Vikings for the 23rd overall and two third-rounders.

The Chicago Bears have traded up in the first round to take Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields.

To acquire the 11th pick, the Bears dealt the 20th overall pick, a fifth-rounder, and a first- and fourth-round selection in 2021 to the New York Giants.

The Philadelphia Eagles have traded up to the tenth pick in a deal with the Dallas Cowboys.

Dallas received the No. 12 pick and a 2021 third-rounder.

With the selection, the Eagles selected DeVonta Smith.

The San Francisco 49ers were very secretive about who they wanted with the third overall pick on Thursday night.

The front office, along with head coach Kyle Shanahan, didn't tell the team's coaching staff and scouts that Trey Lance would be the selection.

The 49ers were linked to Alabama quarterback Mac Jones for weeks after trading up to No. 3.

The first round of the 2021 NFL Draft began as many expected with quarterbacks selected first, second and third, but things got wild once the Panthers and Broncos took cornerbacks with the eight and ninth picks, respectively. The Eagles, Bears and Jets traded up over the course of five picks to grab the players they badly wanted with Chicago paying a high price for Justin Fields.

The Philadelphia Eagles acquired the 10th pick from the Dallas Cowboys for the No. 12 pick and a 2021 third-round selection.

The Chicago Bears acquired the 11th pick from the New York Giants for the 20th overall pick, a fifth-rounder, and a first- and fourth-round selection in 2021.

The New York Jets acquired the 14th overall selection and a fourth-round pick from the Minnesota Vikings for the 23rd overall and two third-rounders.

Trey Lance has emerged as the favorite for the San Francisco 49ers with the third overall pick.

BetOnline has Lance as a -150 favorite ahead of Mac Jones at +150 and Justin Fields at +500.

Kyle Pitts is a long shot at +5000.

The New Orleans Saints are trying to move into the top-10 of the draft, sources tell ESPN.

While the primary reason isn't to select a quarterback, the Saints would change their minds if one quarterback remains available at their new draft slot. 

The Detroit Lions explored trading up with the Atlanta Falcons for the fourth overall pick with an eye on taking Ja'Marr Chase, according to a report.

Ultimately, Atlanta's asking price for the No. 4 pick was too high.

The Lions have the 7th overall pick and a need at wide receiver.

Justin Herbert made an appearance on the NFL Network this week and lobbied for the Los Angeles Chargers to draft Penei Sewell.

"I'm doing my best [of lobbying for Sewell]. He's an incredible player," Herbert said. "Whenever you get a tackle like that in the draft, he can change your program. Always a big fan and I'm an even bigger fan of the way he is off the field."

Herbert and Sewell were teammates at Oregon for two seasons.

The one issue with Herbert's request is that the left tackle is unlikely to be on the board when the Chargers pick 13th overall.
