Robert Kraft Acknowledges Patriots Have To Draft QB Soon

Mar 30, 2018 8:49 AM

The New England Patriots lack a succession plan for Tom Brady and Robert Kraft is aware that a quarterback will have to be drafted soon.

"I'm going to put my fan hat on, and obviously at some point we have to," Kraft said. "Not just that, but think what happened in the '08 season when in the first quarter against Kansas City, Tom [Brady] goes out. How many people would have said that Matt Cassel would have led us to an 11-5 season? I put my faith and confidence in Bill [Belichick]. He knows his responsibilities. Anything can happen, even if Tom comes in [and is in] tip-top shape.

"Part of why the networks pay us the funding they do, and the reason this is the best entertainment product in America, is you don't know -- one play can change a whole season. One play with one person. To do a good job managing an NFL franchise, we've always said understanding quality depth management, that's our business."

Since taking Brady in 2000, the Patriots have drafted eight quarterbacks. The highest of those selections was Jimmy Garoppolo, who was taken in the second round in 2014.

Checkered History Of Teams With Two Top-5 Picks In Same Draft

Mar 29, 2018 3:38 PM

Since the common draft era began in 1967, Washington in 2000; the 1994, '92 and '82 Colts; and the 1979 Bills have had a pair of picks in the top-5.

The Cleveland Browns own the first and fifth overall picks in this year's draft.

The 10 players selected in those drafts spent 68 combined seasons in the NFL but played in only 17 Pro Bowls and 17 playoff games for the teams that drafted them. The bulk of those Pro Bowls belong to Marshall Faulk.

The Browns are widely expected to select a quarterback with the first overall pick.

Saquon Barkley Doesn't Work Out At Penn State Pro Day

Mar 21, 2018 9:25 AM

Saquon Barkley didn't work out at Penn State's pro day after he learned that no NFL running backs coaches would be in attendance.

Barkley will, however, soon begin visiting with teams ahead of the draft.

He had planned on working out Tuesday.

"I woke up this morning and that was the game plan," Barkley said of doing the workouts, "but then when I realized there wasn't a running backs coach here, I figured there was no point for me to run routes or do drills."

Bills 'Not Ready' To Move Up In Draft For Quarterback

Mar 20, 2018 7:08 PM

The Buffalo Bills have the assets to move up in next month's NFL Draft for a quarterback, but they aren't yet ready to make such a bold move.

"The truth? Most of these quarterbacks I've only spent 15 minutes with. [At the combine, each team can meet with prospects for a maximum of 15 minutes per player.] I haven't spent enough time to have an opinion about any of them yet, honestly," general manager Brandon Beane said.

"I actually sent a little note to our [scouts] yesterday. We got six weeks to get our board together. I am not there yet, knowing if we can or will move up again. I want Sean [McDermott] to get to know all of them. We're just keeping an open mind. Where we're at, we've got the picks, we've got the draft capital. I'm not ready to pull the trigger."

After trading Tyrod Taylor to the Cleveland Browns, the Bills have two first-round picks (No. 21, No. 22) as well as two second and third-rounders.

Jets Agree To Trade Up From No. 6 To No. 3 With Colts

Mar 17, 2018 5:09 PM

The New York Jets have agreed to trade up from the No. 6 spot to the No. 3 spot with the Indianapolis Colts.

The Jets will send two second round picks (Nos. 37 and 49) along with their 2019 second round pick to the Colts.

Chris Ballard said the teams had been discussing a potential trade since early in the week.

"They had an interest to move up to (No.) 3 and kind of went back and forth for the last four or five days," Ballard said in a video posted on the Colts' website. "Talked to a couple other teams, but we still wanted to stay in position in that top 10 where we could still get a premium player. We feel like at (No.) 6, we'll still be able to get a premium player."

The Jets re-signed Josh McCown and signed Teddy Bridgewater in free agency.

Calvin Ridley Declares Himself NFL Draft's Best Receiver

Mar 8, 2018 9:39 AM

Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley is a potential first-round pick, but he sees himself as the best receiver in the entire 2018 draft class.

"I do feel like I'm the best receiver in the draft," Ridley told NFL Network's Kimberly Jones. "I just want to prove it."

Ridley didn't test well at the NFL Combine, but he downplayed those events as a barometer for football skill.

"I don't get into a receiver stance and broad jump before I run a route. Whoever gets me is getting a great player," Ridley said. "... I know I can beat all those scores by a lot, but (in training) I was trying to get ready for my 40, which I was upset about, too. I didn't have a great combine, not like I wanted to. I should've gone in there and just run the 40 and run routes, and done all the other stuff here (at pro day). ... Mistake."

Browns Could Take Saquon Barkley With No. 1 Pick After Strong Combine

Mar 5, 2018 11:55 AM

Already considered one of the best prospects in this year's NFL Draft, Saquon Barkley further improved his stock with a strong performance at the scouting combine.

There is talk that the Cleveland Browns may now have Barkley at the top of their draft board as they assess what to do with the first overall pick.

A running back hasn't been drafted with the No. 1 pick since Ki-Jana Carter (1995).
