49ers To Meet With Myles Garrett In Case Browns Don't Take Him No. 1

Mar 30, 2017 1:35 PM

The San Francisco 49ers will meet with Myles Garrett in case the Cleveland Browns don't take him first overall as widely expected.

The 49ers own the second overall pick.

John Lynch was on hand for Garrett’s pro day workout in College Station, Texas, and seemed dutifully impressed that Garrett participated.

“I thought it was impressive,” Lynch said. “Here’s this kid who really doesn’t need to show everyone much more, but yet he shows up and runs a 40. I think it just speaks to the kind of kid he is. It was impressive. It’s well-documented – I’m not saying anything ground-breaking – he’s a special athlete.

“He checks all the boxes. That’s why people are talking about him in the way they are.”

Browns Won't Trade First Overall Pick

Mar 28, 2017 4:09 PM

The Cleveland Browns have ruled out trading the first overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft.

"No," Jackson said. "I can tell you no on that one."

The Browns are widely expected to draft Myles Garrett even though they're publicly non-committal.

The Browns have Brock Osweiler, Cody Kessler and Kevin Hogan on the roster at quarterback.

Steelers Will Pay 'Special Attention' To QBs In Draft

Mar 29, 2017 8:23 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers have aggressively evaluated draft-eligible quarterbacks in the past few years and will do so this year.

Ben Roethlisberger, 35, said in late January that he would evaluate his future during the offseason.

"We've been in that mentality," Mike Tomlin said. "Our experience in this business and the realities of this business put us in that mindset. [General manager] Kevin [Colbert] and I have spent special attention to that position over the last several years, if nothing else from a dry-run perspective, to gain the knowledge and the information necessary to make good decisions when we come to that fork in the road. Who's to say that we aren't there right now?"

The Steelers haven't selected a quarterback in the top three rounds of the draft since taking Roethlisberger 11th overall in 2004.

Bears To Hold Private Workout With DeShone Kizer

Mar 23, 2017 2:10 PM

The Chicago Bears will hold a private workout with Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer.

The Bears also sent a contingent to the Clemson pro day last week to get a closer look at QB Deshaun Watson. The club also had at least one representative at North Carolina's pro day earlier this week, where another top-rated QB, Mitch Trubisky, worked out.

The Bears signed Mike Glennon in the offseason but he's considered a bridge quarterback.

Reuben Foster Taken Off Draft Board Of Team With Top-15 Pick

Mar 22, 2017 8:39 AM

At least one NFL team has removed Reuben Foster from their draft board in the wake of a heated argument between the Alabama linebacker and a hospital worker at the Scouting Combine, according to a report.

That club holds a pick in the top-15.

"He already had immaturity, issues with life skills. This is the same guy," a team evaluator said of Foster. "We're not in the market."

Foster is widely considered the top linebacker in this year's draft class.

49ers Will Continue To Explore Quarterback Market

Mar 13, 2017 8:26 AM

The San Francisco 49ers have signed Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley this offseason while also being linked to a trade for Kirk Cousins.

Despite the two free agent signings at quarterback, the 49ers will continue to explore the market.

"We'll continue to look," Kyle Shanahan said Friday, per CSN Bay Area. "You rarely take just two guys into a camp. So I have a pretty good feeling we will add more. I don't know whether that'll be through free agency or the draft, but there's every avenue possible. We don't limit ourselves to anything."

The two signings are perhaps a signal the 49ers don't intend to use the second overall pick on a quarterback.

Myles Garrett 'Clinched' Browns' Decision To Take Him At No. 1

Mar 7, 2017 1:45 PM

The strength of Myles Garrett's workout at the NFL combine and interview with the Cleveland Browns has "pretty much clinched their decision (to) take him at No. 1 unless something unforeseen happens between now and the draft."

Most personnel executives regard him as a franchise-changer, although one said he "has a chance to bust. His effort was very inconsistent this year."

The Browns have a need at quarterback but there isn't one in this draft that can compare to Garrett as a pass rusher.

Takkarist McKinley Will Miss 4-6 Months After Shoulder Surgery

Mar 6, 2017 7:55 AM

UCLA defensive end Takkarist McKinley will have surgery on a troublesome right shoulder injury Monday and his recovery time will be "four to six months."

McKinley is one of the most highly-rated edge rushers in this year's NFL draft class.

He has played with the injury for almost two seasons, but that the extent of it was discovered in recent weeks.

"My agent asked if anything was wrong with me, and I said I had a shoulder that was sometimes bothering me," McKinley said. "I had an MRI and the doctor was pretty much amazed I had played with it. Me, I just told my trainers at UCLA, 'Just tape me up I'm ready to go.'

"Why get surgery before the combine? This is a dream come true to me. I'm here to knock it out."

Reuben Foster Sent Home From Combine

Mar 4, 2017 2:17 PM

Reuben Foster, a potential top-10 pick in next month's NFL draft, was sent home from the Indianapolis scouting combine for a "heated altercation" he got into Friday with a hospital worker, according to multiple sources.

All one NFL spokesman would say was that Foster was being sent home for "personal reasons." He did not want to comment further.

Foster is the top-graded inside linebacker for many teams.

Foster was scheduled to fly home to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on Saturday.
