Chip Kelly On Trading Up: It Was A Really Steep Price

Apr 30, 2015 11:25 PM

Chip Kelly has denied reports that the Philadelphia Eagles had been trying to trade up for Marcus Mariota in the days leading up to the draft.

The Eagles were reportedly offering picks, along with defensive end Fletcher Cox, quarterback Sam Bradford, linebacker Mychal Kendricks, guard Evan Mathis and cornerback Brandon Boykin.

“I didn’t think it was going to happen, and it didn’t happen,” Kelly said, via Reuben Frank of CSN Philly. “It was a really steep price.”

The Eagles instead stayed at No. 20 and picked Nelson Agholor.

Eagles, Bears Making Hardest Push For No. 2 Pick

Apr 30, 2015 8:44 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears are the two teams making the strongest push to trade up to the No. 2 spot in the draft.

The Tennessee Titans own the second overall pick and are pushing for a significant package to part with the pick.

Both the Eagles and Bears are targeting Marcus Mariota.

Jay Cutler played collegiately in Nashville for Vanderbilt and could be included in the deal, though Bob Holtzman reports the Titans are not interested in Cutler. The Bears would only have $4 million in dead money from Cutler's $16.5 million 2015 cap hit if he was traded to the Titans.

Philadelphia has offered two first rounders, a third rounder, Fletcher Cox, Brandon Boykin, Mychal Kendricks and more to move up, according to Ian Rapoport.

Eagles Could Bypass Titans At No. 2 With Buccaneers' Trade

Apr 30, 2015 7:18 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles are in pursuit of Marcus Mariota and have been zeroed in on moving up to No. 2 with the Tennessee Titans, but they could instead try to business with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Buccaneers are planning on taking Jameis Winston, but receiving multiple pieces for the first overall pick would allow Lovie Smith and Jason Licht to quickly rebuild an entire team. The move also allows them to bypass the risk that comes with selecting Winston.

The Buccaneers want an extra first round pick already and could receive extra picks in subsequent years.

Washington Looking To Move Down From No. 5

Apr 30, 2015 11:51 AM

Washington is open to trading down from the No. 5 slot in the NFL Draft as Scot McCloughan rebuilds the roster.

"There's no question that the Redskins would like to trade down. The question is whether or not they're going to get value in doing that," Albert Breer said. "They have seven picks right now over the next three days. Scot McCloughan said himself on Monday that he'd like to get that number closer to 10. The problem is the way this draft shakes out, you don't want to drop out of the top 15. They're limited to as how far they'd be willing to drop down and they'd still like to fortify those lines of scrimmage."

When McCloughan was with the San Francisco 49ers, the team selected three offensive linemen, a defensive lineman, a linebacker and a tight end in the first round.

Saints Could Draft QB But Doesn't Mean End Of Drew Brees

Apr 30, 2015 11:43 AM

The New Orleans Saints could draft a quarterback with the 31st overall pick, but it is not necessarily a sign that the franchise is planning to transition away from Drew Brees.

Bryce Petty of Baylor was worked out by the Saints.

“I think you’re always looking to get a young quarterback in the program,” Mickey Loomis said, via ESPN.com. “We’ve got one in Ryan Griffin that we like. And if an opportunity presents itself, hey, we may take another one here. But I don’t see the end for Drew Brees on the short-term horizon. At least I certainly hope not. But it does take time for these quarterbacks to develop. And we’re conscious of that. We evaluate the quarterbacks. And obviously if an opportunity presents itself to take one at the right time, we’re not afraid to do that.”

Eagles Continuing Attempts To Trade For Marcus Mariota

Apr 30, 2015 5:43 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles remain interested in trading up for Marcus Mariota, reportedly "doing all they can" to acquire him.

The Eagles would presumably need to get an agreement with the Tennessee Titans done to draft Mariota at No. 2.

Philadelphia has Sam Bradford, the 20th overall pick this year, their pick in 2016 and presumably additional picks to parlay for Mariota.

The Cleveland Browns have interest in Bradford and could help facilitate a trade.

Chip Kelly views Mariota as a sure thing in his system, but it is unclear how much the Eagles will be prepared to give up for him.

Leonard Williams Believes He Should Go First Overall

Apr 29, 2015 6:15 PM

Leonard Williams believes he should be the top overall pick in Thursday's draft.

Williams is rated by RealGM's Jeff Risdon as the top overall prospect in the 2015 NFL Draft.

"I respect his confidence," Williams said Wednesday when asked about comments from Dante Fowler thinking he is the best defensive player in the draft. "I feel like every player is going to have to have that type of confidence to do well at the next level, but at the same time I feel like I'm the best defensive player."

Williams was asked if he feels like the best player in the draft.

"Yeah, I feel like I should be taken No. 1," he said with a smile.

Williams has been linked to the Tennessee Titans at No. 2.

"I love the D-line coach (Giff Smith), we have a pretty good connection," he said when asked about the Titans. "The defensive scheme they showed me, I feel like I'd fit in pretty well. With (defensive lineman) Jurrell Casey being from USC, I feel like he would be a good mentor for me."

ESPN Has Conflicting Reports On Browns-Titans Trade Talks

Apr 29, 2015 10:23 PM

There have been conflicting ESPN reports about whether the Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans have held discussions on the second overall pick.

Pat McManamon has reported that the Browns and Titans have held discussions in which Cleveland sends the 12th and 19th picks for the second pick.

A source with the Titans told ESPN's Paul Kuharsky that the Browns had not made an offer for the No. 2 overall pick, and another source close to the Browns said there have been no substantive talks with the Titans and that these discussions commonly take place as the draft approaches.

The Browns would take Marcus Mariota if they acquire the pick from the Titans.

Cleveland selected Johnny Manziel in the first round last year, but they appear willing to concede he is not the solution at quarterback for the franchise.
