Bills Wanted To Move Up To No. 1 To Select Sammy Watkins

May 21, 2014 12:40 AM

The Buffalo Bills were so enamored by Sammy Watkins that they attempted to move up all the way to No. 1 to ensure they were able to select him.

The Bills eventually moved up from No. 9 to No. 4 to select Watkins, giving up their first round pick next season and a fourth rounder as well.

“We went with Houston right off the bat,” Bills' director of player personnel Jim Monos said. “We tried to go to No. 1. They weren’t having it. They knew who they wanted, so we started working our way right down.”

The Browns called before the Texans submitted their pick for Jadeveon Clowney to confirm that the Bills were still interested. The Bills were unsure what the Jacksonville Jaguars were thinking with the No. 3 pick.

“We really didn’t know,” Monos said. “Jacksonville never tipped it. We had just heard so much that they needed a receiver. We thought that this was going to be Sammy. We knew that if Jacksonville didn’t take him we had a shot.”

Bills Tried To Trade Up For Carlos Hyde

Jul 2, 2014 7:26 AM

The Buffalo Bills attempted to trade up to select Carlos Hyde.

Hyde, a running back out of Ohio State, was picked by the San Francisco 49ers.

“What we were told by Miami was the 49ers deal was more appealing because they didn’t have to drop down as far because San Francisco still had a pick in the second round so that made sense to them and it made sense to us,” Doug Whaley said.

The 49ers picked Hyde and the Bills moved on to trade for Bryce Brown to round out their backfield for the 2014 season.

122 Of 256 Players In 2009 NFL Draft Already Out Of League

Sep 2, 2014 12:55 PM

The 2009 NFL Draft was one of the worst in recent memory.

Of the 256 players selected that year, there are almost as many out of the league -- 122 -- as there are still on one of the 32 teams -- 134. However, just 38 of 256, or a not-so-sizzling 14.8 percent, remain on their original teams.

Matthew Stafford was the first overall pick by the Detroit Lions, followed by Jason Smith, Tyson Jackson, Aaron Curry and Mark Sanchez.

There have been just 12 total Pro Bowlers in the class.

Bridgewater Didn't Want To Be Picked By Browns

May 19, 2014 11:38 PM

Teddy Bridgewater said he wouldn't have wanted to play for the Cleveland Browns had they drafted him with the 22nd overall pick.

Bridgewater eventually was picked with the 32nd overall pick by the Minnesota Vikings.

"There was a chance, but I actually told my agent that's not the place where I wanted to be. Throughout this entire process I felt comfortable with the Minnesota Vikings. Every visit that I had with the team, you know, there was a family environment and the players, great guys. A great group of guys. So I felt comfortable wanting to play here."

Browns Won Two Most Lopsided Trades Of Draft

Nov 29, 2014 4:23 AM

The Cleveland Browns won the two most lopsided trades of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Though it ranked second on Bill Barnwell's list, the Browns' acquisition of the Buffalo Bills' first round pick in 2015 can become the most impactful. The Browns acquired the ninth overall pick, along with a 2015 first rounder and a fourth rounder for the fourth overall selection, which the Bills used on Sammy Watkins.

The Bills have selected in the top half of the draft for more than a decade.

The Browns got 170.5 percent of trade value in the deal.

But the most lopsided trade was when the Browns sent the 218th overall pick in 2014 for a sixth rounder in 2015. Even if the Ravens are the 15th best team in the NFL, this like dealing 218 for 191 for free. It represents 400 percent of trade value.

Rams Didn't Make, Receive Any Calls On Sam Bradford

Aug 12, 2014 8:53 AM

The St. Louis Rams created a smokescreen at No. 13 in regards to their purported interest in Johnny Manziel.

The Rams wanted to select Zack Martin all along.

Jeff Fisher said the Rams neither made calls or received calls about the availability of Sam Bradford. The Rams have been unequivocal in their desire not to trade Bradford.

In 2013, Bradford had 14 touchdown passes against four interceptions before tearing an ACL.

Texas Get Shutout Of Draft For First Time Since 1937

May 17, 2014 11:54 PM

The Texas Longhorns had zero players selected in the NFL Draft for the first time since 1937.

Texas was one of just five schools from college football's five power conferences (Big 12, SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12) to suffer the ignominious feat. Illinois, Northwestern, Rutgers and fellow Big 12 member Kansas were the others.

Jackson Jeffcoat was the Big 12 Defensive player of the Year.
