Risdon's Sunday Combine Notes

Oct 11, 2014 6:45 PM

Sunday's notes are sponsored by Pacifico beer. After a long day of watching draft prospects run repetitive drills and being largely shunned by the more "name" media and NFL staff members, the Pacifico back at the hotel room tasted mighty nice. Most of the running backs ran in the 4.5s and even 4.6s just after several wideouts notched times in the low 4.4s in the 40-yard dash. Many were visibly disappointed, as were lots of the evaluators hoping to see some serious speed. Prospect Notes: -- Clemson wide receiver Jacoby Ford lit it up with a 4.28 40 very early in the day, the second-fastest time ever at the Combine. He ran it with an effortless gait that drew some serious "wows" around Lucas Oil Field, reminiscent of Usain Bolt with his bright yellow shoes. -- Not to be outdone, Ford's Clemson teammate C.J. Spiller matched his time towards the end of the day after so many in his running back grouping plodded to very unimpressive times. It should be noted his 20-second split time was faster than Ford's and identical to Chris Johnson's record-setting 4.24 run a couple years ago. I've said it before, I'll say it again: even though the running back market is oversaturated and teams are clearly looking at other needs higher in the draft, I will be shocked if someone with Spiller's speed falls out of the top 10. It might not be any teams picking there now, but trust me that no general manager wants to be the guy who failed to draft the next Chris Johnson. -- Ryan Mathews is impressing with both his athletic prowess and his business-like demeanor. The Fresno State running back is impressively cut and showed great quickness in the short shuttle, not to mention his 4.41 40 time. He carries himself like he's heading into war at every drill, yet in interviews he comes across as affable and coachable. I get the strong sense he is now the #2 running back in this draft class on many team boards, if he wasn't already. -- Toby Gerhart earned points for his low 4.5 time primarily because of how he went about it. Most guys carefully lined up every single muscle in a non-football 3-point stance, often waiting several seconds before launching themselves. Gerhart walked up to the line, slightly bent his knees, and took off. That shows more legit football speed, not track speed, and it was duly noted as such. He runs very upright, however, something that shows up on game film as well. -- One receiver having a very bad day was Dezmon Briscoe of Kansas, who ran in the upper 4.6s despite a couple of DQ'ed runs for leaning too far. He comes from an offense where the system is often credited for getting receivers open, and at that speed and poor shuttle numbers, it's evident the cocksure, lanky Briscoe is a complete product of the system. He might be waiting a very long time to hear his name called on draft weekend. -- Illinois wide receiver Arrelious Benn drew several comparisons to Anquan Boldin with his muscular build and hard-charging running style. He has humbly and successfully handled the questions about his rough 2009 season at Illinois, not casting stones despite clearly having some legit rocks he could chuck. -- My fellow members of the Ohio Bobcat nation will be pleased to know that Taylor Price had a very strong showing in all the workouts, running the second-fastest 40 time (4.41) and also ranking near the top in the vertical jump. He measured in with large hands for his average height, and he wears his 204 pounds nicely. As one prominent draft writer noted to me, "If he came from Ohio State and not Ohio U. he'd be a second round lock." -- His workout numbers weren't eye-popping, but I like the way Fordham quarterback John Skelton fit in with the big boys. He garnered a quick and genuine rapport with some of the receivers and the other quarterbacks. He is built almost identically to Joe Flacco. -- One under-the-radar prospect that helped his stock in workouts was Louisville wide receiver Brandon Long, who rated near the top in almost every drill. He has decent size and very large hands, which he flashed at Louisville during a very difficult time for the program. He has a chance to stick as a possession receiver and special teams contributor, something he is amenable to based on talking to him. NFL Notes: -- The strong performances of the Clemson players today seemed to jog the memory of many people about former Tiger James Davis, who missed his rookie season with the Browns with a controversial injury. It was funny to watch Browns coach Eric Mangini sidestep all the Davis questions (Davis was injured in a post-practice drill that nearly got Mangini fired), and also fun to see a lot of draftniks scrambling to adjust their "Browns needs" once reminded of Davis, who allegedly beat both Spiller and Ford in foot races while at Clemson and had earned the sarign spot in preseason before his injury. -- I'm surprised at how many people here are surprised by the Jets handling of running back Thomas Jones. If the drafting of Shonn Greene last year wasn't a clear indication that Jones' future was limited, a cursory examination of his contract should have told anyone with any sort of acumen that he was not heading back to New York in 2010. First-guessing his landing spot: Detroit. -- There are a lot of rumors flying regarding several Oakland Raiders that might be on the move. Among the names being thrown around and getting legit interest from other teams: Michael Bush, Darren McFadden, Kirk Morrison, but the one name that really jumps out is cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, one of the elite players at his position in the game today. I can't imagine Oakland giving him up, but too many people who would know are saying that no Raiders players except Richard Seymour, Darius Heyward-Bey, and Zach Miller are unattainable for the right price. -- Pay close attention to Seattle this week, as venerable veteran left tackle Walter Jones is expected to announce his intentions before Friday. If he is coming back, that buys Pete Carroll another year up front. If the multiple-time Pro Bowler retires, then the Seahawks might be forced to address offensive tackle much earlier than they want in the draft. Despite what you'll read elsewhere, I do not believe they have any intention of drafting a tackle with either of their first round picks. -- The press release from Pacman Jones' camp that he will hold workouts later this month for interested teams drew shameless guffaws from a few in the media center. Good luck with that, Mr. Rainmaker... Random Thoughts: -- There is palpable tension between the NFL Network and ESPN. Not so much between the on-air talent, but the behind-the-scenes guys have real hostility and it's clear the execs at both networks view one another with real enmity. -- If you ever find yourself in Kokomo, Indiana, do your taste buds a favor and check out the Half Moon Brewery. I drove up there last night to meet with an old friend (hi Ryan!) and was very impressed with both the food and the on-site-brewed beer. -- I sorely miss my Sirius radio in the car here. Indy just might have the worst radio of any city in the country. Note to the local rock stations: music has been recorded since 1980. Note to local program directors: 11 dedicated Christian music channels and right country music stations are far too many. I had to stop by Best Buy and pick up a couple of CDs last night to make it through my tenure here.

Risdon's Saturday Combine Notes

May 17, 2014 2:22 AM

More than a few people commented that the black-and-grey, diamond-checked, Speedo-esque shorts for the workouts are a terrible look. As a huge fan of loud pants (think Norwegian curling team!), I must agree. These are the sort of shorts you see on websites specially marketing to the alternative lifestyles crowd. Most guys are also wearing long black socks and white shoes, which lends the appearance of your great uncle heading from the golf course to a gay pool party. -- Bruce Campbell continues to astonish with his athleticism. During the broad jump he landed two leaps well over nine feet, but they didn't count because he touched his hands to the ground. I sort of feel for the guys in his group immediately before and after him: Kyle Calloway and Selvish Capers. Capers is no athletic slouch, sticking a broad jump of 8'11", but his toes weren't up to where Campbell's heels landed on his DQ'ed jumps. Campbell also crushed the vertical leap, well over 6" higher than most in his group. Oh yeah, he clocked a sub-5.00 40 time and looked very comfortable moving. If you were looking for the workout wonder, Bruce Campbell is your man! --'Mike Iupati is not a leaper. He eked out just over 7'6" in the broad jump. He would win any Mr. Congeniality award in his group; every other guy appears to genuinely like Iupati and roots for him with positive encouragement. -- One lesser prospect that caught some eyes with his athleticism was UNLV's Joe Hawley. He also had a couple of jumps well over nine feet but couldn't hold the landing. Paired with his impressive bench press yesterday (35 reps), he's probably eased some of the concerns about his lack of bulk (he's 297) and earned a sixth-seventh round draft pick. -- A lot of people are gushing about the offensive line class, and while they are physically impressive, I would strongly encourage some of these people to actually watch a little game film before proclaiming this "the best draft class ever." -- A few astute readers correctly called me out for my comments on Big East linemen not being draftable. My apologies to Anthony Davis from Rutgers, who is most certainly a first-round pick. Davis has not helped himself with the interview process, however. -- Pittsburgh tight end Dorin Dickerson tops the position buzz with his impressive workout. His 40 time of 4.40 blew away many in the media center, and it lends credence to his ability to play at wide receiver, where he lined up during Senior Bowl workouts. He has more draft marketability as a hybrid TE/WR (think Dallas Clark) than as an oversized receiver or undersized tight end, and he appears to have successfully straddled that line. To put it in perspective, Dickerson was almost as fast as LSU track star/return specialist Trindon Holliday, who is nearly a foot shorter and about 60 pounds lighter. Holliday's 4.34 is the fastest here thus far, but much like Johnnie Lee Higgins a couple of years ago he failed to measure up to the pre-Combine hype in the marquee event. -- Colt McCoy measured at just a hair over 6'1", which does not help his stock at all. He is visibly much slighter than most of the rest of the QBs here, akin to when Colt Brennan worked out a couple years ago. Just my opinion, but if he can't light it up throwing at his pro day McCoy could be waiting until Saturday to hear his name called. His shoulder cleared all medical examinations, so the excuses are gone. -- Jimmy Clausen has the smallest hands of any quarterback here, which led to an interesting debate between two prominent draftniks about the merits of having big hands. I award the argument to the pundit who correctly identified Jamarcus Russell as the quarterback with the biggest hand measurement in Combine history, while Peyton Manning ranked near the bottom in his class. Overheard Draft Stuff: "Does anyone in here think Al Davis could even consider not drafting Bruce Campbell anymore?" That drew some laughs and I agree wholeheartedly. "Brandon Carter looked a lot less athletic than I expected." "Trent Williams can flash all the athleticism he wants, but I still don't see any way he's a left tackle." I agree with that one too. "Jared Veldheer's arms are too short, I don't care what he says or how well he ran." "Jermaine Gresham only put up 20 reps (on the bench) and he struggles to break 4.8 in the 40. He can't block a lick, everyone knows that. Tell me how in the hell that guy is first-round material." General Comments: -- To build upon yesterday's comment about the Rams taking Sam Bradford, lots of people keep harping on how much the Rams really liked both Mark Sanchez and Matt Ryan and chose other players instead. When considered with a new owner and a restless fan base tired of three consecutive first-round picks spent on lines that still need lots of work, I'm becoming more inclined to agree with the Bradford-at-#1 speculation. Not that I would do that, mind you... -- I came to Indy with a notion that some more aggressive owners and clubs would be more willing to trade up into the top-five and take on the (likely) last year of giant top-five contracts. I've bounced that notion off about 20 different people, including some actual NFL decision makers, and I've been shot down to put it mildly. So don't expect any of those trading down dreams, Lions, Chiefs, and Rams fans... -- On a related vein, I've wondered if teams will be more willing to sacrifice draft picks to snare the giant, attractive class of restricted free agents. That notion has a lot more traction, but just about everyone believes (as I do) that the depth of this draft makes the picks too valuable to sacrifice for a more bloated contract. I did get some informed feedback that certain players might be worth it to certain teams, specifically when I mentioned Vincent Jackson and Tony Brown. -- How much respect does Colts general manager Bill Polian get from his peers? The Colts let linebacker Gary Brackett, the heart of their up-the-gut defense, hit the open market, but it sounds like most teams aren't even going to make him an offer because they all expect Polian to lock him up to a long-term deal, probably at a lower price than what they could offer.

MRI Reveals No Further Damage In McCoy's Shoulder

Oct 14, 2014 1:43 PM

Colt McCoy underwent an MRI on Friday afternoon that revealed no further damage to his throwing shoulder. McCoy, who is considered one of the top quarterback prospects in this year's NFL Draft, suffered a nerve injury during the BCS national championship game. "Obviously, that was going to be a tough part of the weekend, because people are going to want to know how the shoulder is and how it's healing up," the former Texas Longhorn said. "The good thing is my shoulder is 100 percent fine. There's nothing wrong with it. We found nothing wrong with it. It's just a nerve injury, and it's just about 100 percent. It's just about ready to go."

Tebow, 15 Other QBs Skip Bench Presses

Oct 31, 2014 6:32 AM

Tim Tebow was among 16 quarterbacks that elected not to participate in the bench press Saturday at the NFL Combine. Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen and Texas' Colt McCoy sat out as expected, as did Central Michigan's Dan LeFevour and Cincinnati's Tony Pike. Penn State's Daryll Clark, who could receive a look at other positions, did 21 repetitions, besting Troy QB Levi Brown (20), who lifted Friday.

Injury Cuts Okung's Workout Short

Jul 30, 2014 8:36 PM

Oklahoma State offensive tackle Russell Okung didn't finish drills at the NFL Combine on Saturday after hurting his groin. Okung is considered one of the best tackles in this year's class. He ran the 40-yard dash and did several other pass-protection and change-of-direction drills before sustaining an injury, which a combine official described as minor.

Dez Bryant To Put Off Running 40

Nov 24, 2014 8:25 PM

Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant will not work out at this week's combine in Indianapolis due to a hamstring injury. Bryant only played in Oklahoma State's first three games of the season before being suspended by the NCAA for lying to its investigators. Often players that skip the combine save their workouts for individual pro days. However, due to the hamstring injury he suffered training for this weekend, Bryant might need to push back his pro day from the scheduled March 10 date in Oklahoma.

NFL To Measure Brain Activity At Combine

Feb 16, 2014 9:06 PM

For the first time, all invited players at this week's NFL scouting combine will be given a baseline brain activity exam. Roughly 320 players will undergo the test, called the ImPACT test, and will likely face more grilling than previous classes did about their concussion histories. Those implementing the changes call it smart football. "We're testing everybody, not just at-risk athletes who have had more than one concussion," said Dr. Art Rettig, an orthopedic surgeon at Methodist Sports Medicine in Indianapolis, which runs the medical part of the combine. "Everybody will have this ImPACT test so they will have a baseline, and whatever team they end up with will be sent that baseline information."

Tebow Won't Throw At Combine

Aug 16, 2014 10:20 PM

Tim Tebow said Thursday that he won?t participate in throwing drills when quarterbacks conduct on-field workouts Sunday, but he will take part in running drills. ?In thinking about and talking to my agents and talking to everybody, we just felt confident coming in here and getting to know the coaches, work out, do the interviews and then get ready to go out there and throw at my Pro Day,? Tebow said. As for the rest of his combine experience, Tebow said the interview process and displaying his football knowledge to team personnel is ?100 percent? his focus. ?I want to go out there, just because it?s my nature, to go out there and compete and go show people what I can do and everything,? he said. ?But I just need to be patient. My time will come.?

2010 NFL Mock Draft, Version 7.0 (Pre-Combine)

Aug 7, 2014 12:50 AM

Revised 2/24 Notes: --I?m not buying the talk about a QB going first overall at all. In fact, I?m not buying that this group of QBs is going to litter the upper reaches of the draft as in most years, and the slotting in this one reflects that notion. --When I talk to scouts on teams regarding wide receivers, they want three qualities: speed, great hands, and nimble feet in that order. That?s good news for some, very bad news for others, and that plays out here. --I?m doing some digging on the impact of injuries that force players to miss the Combine workouts, and there are two distinct trends: offensive skill position players fall at least 50% of their projected draft spots (i.e. a player projected at #40 falls to at least #60) outside of potential top 5 picks, while guys in the trenches seldom fall more than a handful. There are variables regarding type and severity or injuries, with the general rule of thumb being the lower on the body, the more it hurts the draft stock. It?s not ironclad but thus far I?ve gone back 5 years and have nearly 50 samples, so it?s not without some statistical merit either. This is very bad news for Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Jahvid Best, Dan Lefevour, and perhaps even Jimmy Clausen. --The deeper into the draft, the more you should focus on the player and slot than the team picking in that slot. I expect a very heavy trade market in this draft beyond the top 8-10 picks (which nobody wants to trade up into and get hit with the last giant rookie contract bill!), particularly from picks 45-80 and then again at the top of each subsequent round. --There are instances where I have a team doubling up on a position even in the first three rounds. Before you get all uppity, keep this in mind: in the last 4 drafts, 30 of the 32 teams have taken multiple players at one position in the same draft class. The Colts, Eagles and Patriots do it with shocking regularity and they are three of the most successful franchises in the league. --As always, please do not mistake the selections here for the selections I would make in the same situations. Sometimes they mesh, often they don?t. This is my best educated guess as to what the teams will do. Teams don?t even have their draft boards or positional rankings finalized yet, so no matter what anyone tells you remember that all mock drafts are pure speculation at this point. If you want to know how I wear my GM hat, I post an annual ?What I Would Do? mock draft the week after the Combine. Round 1 1. St. Louis Rams: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska 2.
