Cardinals Criticized For Inexplicably Waiting To Shop Josh Rosen

Apr 30, 2019 4:26 PM

The Arizona Cardinals were not proactive in determining the trade market of Josh Rosen in advance of draft weekend.

The Cardinals waited until they had selected Kyler Murray to initiate at least some teams in talks.

Some teams that would have been otherwise interested in Rosen didn't receive a call until after Murray was traded.

"I can't think of anyone who could have played this worse," said one of the executives. "EVERYONE knew they were taking Murray and you're drafting first overall. You have nothing to hide from anyone. They could have been quietly shopping Rosen for weeks at least."

Exec: No Other Team Would Have Selected Daniel Jones In Top-17

Apr 30, 2019 1:52 PM

The New York Giants selected Daniel Jones at No. 6 overall as Dave Gettleman fell in love with the Duke quarterback.

Gettleman wanted to control the draft process and limit knowledge of his draft plans internally as the franchise has been known for leaks. The Giants instead leaked to multiple media members that they liked Dwayne Haskins, but also wanted to draft defensive players with their first two picks.

There's a belief the Giants panicked and selected Jones at No. 6 because they feared he wouldn't be available at No. 17.

"There is no way he was going anywhere else in the top 17 picks," said one plugged-in executive for an AFC team. "We run mock drafts and run through the scenarios and I hadn't heard of one team that wanted Jones other than them."

The Giants missed out on one of the premier defensive players that would available at No. 6 and instead selected Dexter Lawrence at No. 17.

"The smart move is draft a pass-rusher [at No. 6] and then try to trade back up for the quarterback if you have to, but I still don't think they would have had to," said the same executive.

Mike Mayock Explains Decision To Send Scouts Home Days Before Draft

Apr 29, 2019 5:17 PM

Mike Mayock explained the Oakland Raiders' reason for sending all of their scouts home a few days before the draft, which he believes was clearly the right decision.

“I came in at an atypical time for a GM, in January, and we had a four-month run that might’ve been the most important in the history of the Oakland Raiders as far as a draft and free agency. We’ve been to one playoff game in 16 years. They’ve been doing things a certain way around here and it hasn’t worked. They bring me in in January and I inherit a group of scouts for four months. I was 100 percent transparent with them the first week I got here. I told every single scout that they might not like the fact that a media guy’s their boss, which they probably didn’t. I told them I knew I had to earn their respect, and I would. But they also had to earn my respect and they had four months to do it because all their contracts were up. I made the decision three weeks ago that when the scouts’ work was done in this building, I was gonna send most of them home. I told them, and 45 minutes later it was on Twitter. So the decision to send them home, in hindsight, was the right one.

“I’ve known for years there have been leaks out of this building. Al Davis had a phobia about it when he was in his prime. He was really good about keeping it from happening. My deal, the bottom line for me, is you’ve got to trust the guys you work with. To me, if you’re a good teammate, what goes on in this building stays in this building.”

Kliff Kingsbury Denies Insisting On Cardinals Selecting Kyler Murray

Apr 29, 2019 12:20 PM

Kliff Kingsbury was prepared to work with Josh Rosen had the Arizona Cardinals decided to draft Nick Bosa at No. 1 instead of Kyler Murray.

“I’d have said, ‘Let’s go to work,’ “ Kingsbury said. “That’s why I signed on here. I knew I was coming here to try and improve the offense. We were last in everything. Try to help Josh become a better player, more comfortable in the system, continue to build him. That was my job. If that was what we were going to do, that’s what I signed up for in the first place.”

Kingsburg was asked what was the biggest misconception about his role in Arizona's draft process.

“That I rolled here and was just like, ‘We’re taking Kyler Murray,’“ Kingsbury said. “First off … I don’t have that type of juice coming in the door. That wasn’t how it went down at all.”

Steve Keim was asked if he seriously considered keeping Rosen and not selecting the player Kingsbury preferred.

“Absolutely,” Keim said. “That’s my job. All spring, your mind races with the different scenarios. At the end of the day, you had to look and say again, ‘What is really going to catapult us into being different?’ I’ve always been a visual guy and I’ve always had success evaluating quarterbacks when I trusted my instincts and my gut. I’ve missed on the guys that looked the part, smelled the part, you tried to invent and because all the things were connecting the dots. You scouted them and said, ‘Okay, they’re going to be a player because they look like this. I’m not saying that’s Josh Rosen. I’m saying I had my real success, guys I’ve loved that have been great NFL players, based on instinct.

“When I closed my eyes and I visualized Kyler Murray running around State Farm Stadium in red and white, for whatever reason, all I saw was just fireworks, excitement, a must-see [environment] where fans have to go and show up and see this thing. Him being the architect was a phenomenal fit for me.”

Dolphins Won't Rule Out Taking QB In 2020 Draft Despite Josh Rosen

Apr 29, 2019 9:47 AM

The Miami Dolphins traded for Josh Rosen during draft weekend, but that doesn't mean they've ruled out selecting a quarterback in the draft next year.

Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert are the probable best quarterbacks in the 2020 NFL Draft.

“Every team in the league is looking for that guy that’s going to lead them to championships,” Grier said. “And so for us, we’re in a position where we’re trying to find that guy, like a lot of teams in the league. So yeah, it was an easy decision. And it doesn’t stop us from doing anything in the future. Who knows? If things go well and we feel he’s the guy, who knows? But it doesn’t stop us from doing anything.”

The New York Jets are attempting to trade down from No. 3 and are widley expected to succeed.

One team believes the Jets already have a deal in place to trade down if Quinnen Williams remains available at No. 3.

The Jets could target an edge rusher or an offensive lineman if they trade down.

Cardinals Make Decision On First Overall Selection

Apr 25, 2019 5:56 PM

The Arizona Cardinals have made a decision on who they plan to select with the No. 1 overall pick, but are keeping it secret for now.

Quinnen Williams has received a call from Steve Keim that he's still a possibility to be selected first overall. It's unclear whether any other players have received similar phone calls.

The Cardinals have been most strongly linked to Kyler Murray at No. 1.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports he will be allowed to tip the No. 1 overall pick if he can get confirmation.

At approximately 5:45 PM EST, Michael Silver reported that the Cardinals have been in touch with the agents of Williams, Murray and Nick Bosa, who are the top-3 prospects on their draft board.
