Sam Darnold Not Ready To Make NFL Decision

Dec 30, 2017 10:31 AM

Sam Darnold remains undecided about his future following USC's loss in the Cotton Bowl to Ohio State.

Darnold threw for 356 yards on 26-of-45 passing. Darnold had a pick-six and lost two fumbles.

"Right now, I think I'm really just focused on just hanging out with my teammates for the next couple of days and really just saying bye to the seniors, because they've put together such a great season," Darnold said. "But it's tough.

"I'll look at everything and make my decision after that."

Darnold said he would consult his family, coaches and former players who have faced a similar decision. The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NFL draft is Jan. 15.

"He's got all the time in the world," USC coach Clay Helton said. "And right now, it's just nice, like he said, just to go back and be with your buddies."

While Darnold is expected to be a top-10 pick in the draft, he has been rumored to be strongly considering remaining at USC.

49ers Fine With Jimmy Garoppolo Altering Draft Position

Dec 27, 2017 11:07 AM

The San Francisco 49ers are 4-0 since installing Jimmy Garoppolo as their starting quarterback, which has completely changed their draft position. The 49ers were given a 95 percent change to finish with a top-five pick at one point, but now they would pick at No. 8 if the draft were to take place today.

The 49ers could fall out of the top-10 with a win in Week 17 at the Rams.

While the 49ers' draft position is taking a hit, they have confidence that their quarterback of the present and future is already in place.

"I feel the same now," Kyle Shanahan said. "I’m definitely enjoying things more right now. It’s always more nice to win, but the plans for us and the way we see the future and everything like that, nothing’s changed. This is part of the process. We’ve got one more game left, then we’ll relax for just a little bit, and really looking forward to the offseason also.”

Baker Mayfield Accepts Invitation To Senior Bowl

Dec 22, 2017 5:33 PM

Baker Mayfield has accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl.

Mayfield is the first Heisman winner to attend the Senior Bowl since Tim Tebow.

NFL.com draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah says Mayfield's decision is in line with his character and attitude, on and off the field: "When you watch him on tape, his greatest attributes are his toughness and his competitiveness. I think making this decision now, even before he's played in one of potentially two playoff games, fits perfectly with his playing style, which is all-gas, no-break aggressiveness.

"I can understand why some players would have some trepidation about playing in an extra game, but I don't know that fear is in Baker Mayfield's vocabulary."

Mayfield has increased his draft stock as 2017 progressed and could now go in the first round.

NFL Could Have 11 Teams Making Change At QB This Offseason

Dec 21, 2017 2:24 PM

While approximately seven teams per offseason make a change at quarterback and there were six teams this past offseason, there could be as many as 11 teams making a change with either their current or long-term QB1 in 2018.

That assumption even excludes a surprise move such as when the Chiefs traded up to draft Patrick Mahomes at last year's draft.

There are six teams that are virtually guaranteed to have a new quarterback next year.

The 2018 draft class could have as many as five quarterbacks selected in the first round.
