Haynesworth Has Swelling In His Knee

Aug 3, 2014 2:39 PM

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Saturday that defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth is dealing with swelling in his knee. Haynesworth arrived at Redskins Park "quite early," Shanahan said, but was experiencing irritation in his knee. The "recommendation from the doctors [was] to have him not run," Shanahan said. It was reported earlier that Haynesworth wouldn't take his conditioning test on Saturday. He has already failed it twice. "I don't know; it all depends on how the knee is, how he's feeling," Shanahan said of when Haynesworth will take the test again. "I never said he had to take the test every day. We want to get you in football shape and when you feel like you can pass the test, we'll let you take it and if you pass it, we'll let you practice with the team."

David Patten Announces Retirement

Oct 31, 2014 10:37 AM

Veteran wide receiver David Patten announced his retirement from football Saturday morning at New England's training camp. Patten, who turns 37 on Aug. 19, said he believed he could keep up physically. But it was the mental challenge that led him to tell coach Bill Belichick he was retiring after four practices. "This is in no way, shape or form what I anticipated coming back here this year," Patten said. "I'm actually a little saddened that I'm proving some of the naysayers right this morning. Some felt I signed back with the team to retire, but that was not part of my thought process. I honestly felt like I could still play this game and play at a high level. I felt the competitive spirit and nature was still there, but over the course of the last two days and over the course of the break [before training camp] away from the team, there was a lot of reflection. There was a lot of contemplation. "I just felt like it was time. It just hit me yesterday. Camp was going really well. I was still able to go out and be competitive and operate at a high level, but I believe once you get to the point in your career where it's multiple years -- it would be my 13th year -- and you're thinking about it mentally and you're not 100 percent into it mentally wise, it's tough to play this game. I always felt like when I got to that that point, it would be in my best interests to walk away."

Jones Says He Wasn't Criticizing Dallas Coaching Staff

Oct 1, 2014 2:52 PM

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones suggested that rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant's ankle injury was a result of his workload. Jones doesn't regret the comment, but said that it wasn't meant to rip the team's coaching staff. Bryant suffered a high-ankle sprain on the second-to-last play of Friday's practice and is out four to six weeks. "I'm not being critical," Jones said Saturday. "What I'm being is analytical, or trying to be analytical. "This is when you all sit down and look at everything you're doing and see if there's some things you can do to help protect your team better, especially during this time five to six weeks away from the opening game."

Roethlisberger Works With First-Team Offense

Aug 3, 2014 3:44 PM

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger worked with the first-team offense when the team opened up training camp. Roethlisberger will serve a conditional six-game suspension, which has opened the door for backups Byron Leftwich and Dennis Dixon. Leftwich was primarily with the second-team skill players Saturday morning and worked some reps with the starting offensive line. Dixon followed Leftwich as Pittsburgh's third quarterback. "We're going to switch it every day," Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said. "But to start the first day, we put our guys out there like we ended up in the spring ... It's the first day and it's a long way to [the end of] training camp."

Goodell Says Benson Won't Be Suspended

Oct 29, 2014 4:41 PM

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says that Bengals running back Cedric Benson won't be suspended for the beginning of the upcoming season. Benson was arrested for his alleged involvement in a bar fight in Texas this offseason. "Cedric expressed to us his understanding that NFL players have a special responsibility to meet high standards of conduct," Goodell said. "Like most public figures, Cedric and other NFL players occasionally may find themselves facing risks that other individuals do not. They must exercise good judgment and restraint when confronted with those risks. "Cedric said he recognizes this and has committed to working hard to make better decisions and avoid any further incidents," Goodell said. "We support him and expect him to be successful in meeting this commitment."

Tyree, Hilliard To Retire With Giants

Jul 6, 2014 6:15 AM

The Giants have signed Super Bowl XLII hero David Tyree and fellow wide receiver Ike Hilliard to one-day contracts so the pair can retire with the team. Tyree will be remembered for one of the greatest catches in Super Bowl history when he snagged a desperation heave from Eli Manning and secured the ball with the aid of his helmet while Rodney Harrison was draped all over him. Hilliard, 34, played in 98 games and started 92 for the Giants between 1997-2004. He finished fifth in franchise history in receptions with 368 catches for a total of 4,630 yards and 27 touchdowns.
