Bengals wide receiver Andre Caldwell sees Florida quarterback Tim Tebow as a second-round pick. Caldwell played with Tebow for two seasons with the Gators. He doesn't think Tebow will either be an elite passer, but praised his work ethic and said he would take his former teammate in the "late second round" if he was the general manager. "He needs time," Caldwell said. "He needs to sit behind one of those good quarterbacks for about three years because I know he?s going to put in the work and the effort to be a great quarterback. He?s going to learn. I don?t think he?s going to be an elite passer ever. But he?s a playmaker. He?ll get the ball there. He probably can?t make the prettiest looking passes. But he?s going to use what he has to his advantage. Running. Scrambling. Making passes. He?s got a strong arm and I think he can make the throws, but they may not be the prettiest."

Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant is defending himself against critics as the NFL Draft draws closer. "I'm not the type of person that will try to confront somebody, but now I feel like it's gone too far. It's gone too far," Bryant said. "I ain't never got in trouble with nobody. I never said anything. I don't say anything wrong to nobody. I'm friendly. This here is too far. "What do this got to do with me playing football? Even if I did forget my cleats, what do that have to do with me playing football? I don't think it has anything to do with me playing football."

The Raiders may ask quarterback JaMarcus Russell to take a pay cut if they end up acquiring a high-profile quarterback like Donovan McNabb, according to the San Jose Mercury News. However, Russell has said that he won't accept a pay cut.

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy threw all sorts of passes in a workout for NFL scouts on Wednesday. "I've been waiting for this day a long time," he said. "I thought I went out there and killed it today." McCoy showed off his healed right shoulder, completing all 46 of his passes in a controlled workout.

Kicker Jason Elam will sign a one-day contract with the Broncos so he can retire as a member of the team. Elam played 15 seasons with Denver from 1993 to 2007 and shares the NFL record with Tom Dempsey for the longest field goal.

Eagles fullback Leonard Weaver wants to see Donovan McNabb remain with the team. "I'm surprised," Weaver told NFL Sirius Radio of the trade rumors swirling around McNabb. "Let the man go ahead and play the last year of his contract out. ... Not a knock on (backup quarterback Kevin) Kolb, but I would love for Donovan to come back for another year so we can try to win it all." Last season was Weaver's first with Philadelphia.

Steelers defensive end Aaron Smith says that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's recent off-field issues won't be an issue for the team. Roethlisberger is under investigation for sexual assault in Milledgeville, Ga. "Honestly, it doesn't really matter to me," said Smith, who added that he "enjoys Ben" and has always gotten along with Roethlisberger. "That's his business, and my business is playing football, so when we come here we focus on games and that's all we're here for."

If the Eagles end up trading Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb will step into the starting role. While Kolb doesn't have McNabb's arm strength, at least one NFL scout believes that he'd be better for Philadelphia's system. "He can throw the slant better than McNabb," the scout said. "And that's a throw you'd want to master if you're playing in the traditional West Coast." A former NFL coach added that the only way for the Eagles to find out if Kolb is ready is to simply throw him out there. "He's been trained well, and the position comes naturally to him," said the coach. "I think he has it. But there's really only one way to know for sure, and that's to throw him out there."

Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga got emotional when explaining his past troubles on Monday. He served about a month in rehab following an offseason arrest for DUI. "All I can say is you're looking at a different guy, a different person," Maualuga said. "I just hope the city of Cincinnati would accept my apology and hopefully help me through all of this."

Hall of Fame quarterback and Bills legend Jim Kelly had dinner with Tim Tebow on Sunday night. It's unclear whether the dinner occurred before or after Tebow met with Buffalo. Bills coach Chan Gailey expressed interest in Tebow last week, saying he has "every tangible" you could ever want in a quarterback.
