Steelers May Bench Sweed For Drops

Oct 30, 2014 7:14 AM

The Steelers may deactivate wide receiver Limas Sweed over his propensity to drop passes. "Absolutely," Tomlin said Tuesday when asked if he was considering benching Sweed in favor of veteran Shaun McDonald. Sweed dropped a pass in the end zone in the third quarter on Sunday. "Quite frankly, he's not catching the football when he's deep down the field," Tomlin said. "He's got some tape that shows that. He's got to shake that off. If and when he's given his next opportunity to make a similar play, he better make it."

Smith Botched Route On Delhomme's Interception

Aug 8, 2014 2:38 PM

Panthers receiver Steve Smith took the blame for Jake Delhomme's costly interception against the Cowboys on Monday night. Frustrated by his inability to get open and navigate double-teams, Smith altered his route late in the fourth quarter. He stayed outside instead of running inside as Delhomme expected. The result was a Dallas interception that resulted in a 27-yard return for the game-clinching touchdown. "Jake was expecting me to cross his face," Smith said. "I should have crossed his face and I didn't cross his face. I put Jake in a bad situation. I second-guessed my route and I shouldn't have. The bottom line is that I screwed Jake." Smith didn't want Delhomme taking the blame for another loss. "I am a firm believer in calling a spade a spade," added Smith. "Jake, for many years, has expected me to cross a guy's face. Nine out of ten times I cross his face. This is the one time I didn't and I screwed us. (Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman) was playing a cover two technique. He was taking the inside away. He did a good job. Terence Newman did a good job all day. They had a very good game plan. They stuck to it. On that play I was impatient and it didn't work. It was not up to the caliber it should have been and what's expected of me and what I'm used to doing."

Jauron Wants To Get Owens More Involved

Sep 15, 2014 6:14 AM

Bills coach Dick Jauron wants to get receiver Terrell Owens more involved in the team's offense. Owens didn't have a reception in Buffalo's loss to New Orleans on Sunday. "We'll take more shots," Jauron said Monday. "We definitely have to get him more involved in the game no matter what the defense does." The Bills have targeted Owens just 13 times through the season's first three games.

Jets WR Was Benched Due To Tweets

Oct 10, 2014 9:47 AM

Jets wide receiver David Clowney was benched for Sunday's game against the Titans due to some controversial Tweets. New York head coach Rex Ryan was upset that Clowney complained about a lack of playing time on his Twitter page. "I was upset with him, yep," Ryan told the Associated Press. "For a couple of reasons. One of them is you'll hear things if a guy's unhappy or whatever. I'm not a big Twitter guy, but you hear different things. To me, this is about our team and understanding this is about our team. No individual is bigger than the team." Shortly after New York's Week 2 win over New England, Clowney posted the following on his page: "1 play in the 1st Half, 4 plays in the 2nd half ... A bit disappointed about my playing time but very happy and satisfied about the win."

Owens Attacks Media Once Again

Nov 2, 2014 12:36 AM

Bills receiver Terrell Owens claims that the media tried to force him to say something controversial following Sunday's loss to the Saints. "It really just shows you the angle that the media has taken all these years," Owens said on Sporting News Radio's Two Live Stews. "Over the years I've always kind of spoken openly about whatever is being asked with my answers, so the last four or five years I've kind of noticed that and tried taking some steps to prevent some of those things from happening. "But [Sunday] as you saw, it was obviously ... [the media] took some more than initiative to try to get me to kind of go down the wrong path. I know the last two teams that I've been on, I felt like I left those teams prematurely due to media interviews that I've done and things kind of taken out of context and they created sort of a media whirlwind in the locker room and things kind of went downhill from there. I'm just trying to do the best job I can do as far as answering the questions and trying to be a better teammate and not try to throw people under the bus." Sunday marked the first postgame interview that Owens conducted this season.

Struggling Titans Will Stick With Collins

Oct 25, 2014 6:10 PM

The Titans are winless, but coach Jeff Fisher says that quarterback Kerry Collins isn't to blame. "Kerry has been fine. He has been fine," Fisher told the Tennessean on Monday. "It is a tough defense to attack and he made some great throws. I thought he did a great job, as best he could, redirecting protections. "Kerry is not the reason. He is certainly not the reason for the situation we're in." Collins has been solid this season, but the Tennessean points out that he has been dreadful in the fourth quarter. He's a combined 8-of-24 for 77 yards with a 25.9 rating in the fourth through the season's first three games.

Eagles' Jackson On Pace To Eclipse T.O.'s Stellar 2004 Campaign

May 16, 2014 10:54 PM

Over the last decade, the Philadelphia Eagles have made numerous trips to the NFC Title game but only one Super Bowl appearance. Many blamed the team's lack of a big-game wide receiver for their inability to get over the hump, but the acquisition of Terrell Owens in 2004 momentarily solved that problem. Owens caught 77 passes for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns that season, even though he missed the season's final two games due to injury. With a hobbled Owens, they nearly defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX, but fell short in 24-21 loss. Now, five years later, the Eagles may finally have another big-game receiver in second-year man DeSean Jackson. Jackson, who led the team in receiving in his rookie year with 62 catches for 912 yards and two touchdowns, is on pace to nearly match Owens' numbers from Philadelphia's Super Bowl season in 2004. Through the season's first three games, Jackson has 12 receptions for 259 yards and two touchdowns. His yards per catch average is an excellent 21.6. If you project his numbers over the full season, you'll get a line that looks similar to those of Owens five seasons ago -- 64 catches for 1,381 yards and 11 touchdowns. Fewer catches, yes, but more yards due to Jackson's superior speed. Also, the 11 touchdowns may not directly match the 14 Owens recorded, but DeSean does already have one punt return for a touchdown in 2009. Jackson may be five inches shorter than Owens and lack the Iron Man physique, but his big plays so far this season have allowed him to jump into the future Hall of Famers shoes. The Eagles have had just one 1,000-yard receiver since Owens' efforts in 2004. Kevin Curtis eclipsed the mark in 2007.
