Jets Tried To Convince Le'Veon Bell To Attend OTAs

May 31, 2019 8:38 AM

The New York Jets tried unsuccessfully to convince Le'Veon Bell to attend voluntary offseason workouts.

Defensive tackle Steve McLendon, who was a teammate of Bell's for three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, also tried to get Bell to attend the workouts.

"I talked to him and I told him, 'You understand this place is different than Pittsburgh,'" McLendon said. "I said, 'You need to get back so you can understand the quarterback and the situation.' ... I told him, 'The media is gonna get you if you don't come back.' That's the truth. I did tell him that."

McLendon's main pitch to Bell was that getting to know Sam Darnold is important.

"You just want to get to know your teammates, especially when we have a young quarterback," McLendon said. "He needs to know your rhythm, he needs to know how patient you are. It's easy to see on the film but it's so hard to prepare with because [Bell] is very dynamic in the things that he can do. Out of the backfield, in the backfield, lining up at wide receiver, he can do a lot of special things, and for me it's very amazing to have him on our team."

Peyton Manning Wants To 'Stay Connected' To NFL

May 31, 2019 8:27 AM

While he doesn't know exactly how, Peyton Manning says he wants to "stay connected" to the NFL in any way he can.

Manning passed on a chance to work in the Monday Night Football booth.

He says working in a front office isn't something on his radar right now either.

"I can't speak too far into the future. I guess in a way I am [working in the league]. I'm doing this little thing for the NFL for the 100th year, I went from Columbus yesterday to Ada, Ohio, for Wilson, where they make the footballs. ... I went and kind of learned how to make a football, looking for a job. And I failed miserably. And I'm going to Chicago next week. ... I have enjoyed that. ... I have enjoyed staying connected with it in this way.

"I still stay connected, I just can't ... look into a glass and say what I'm going to be wanting to do next year or five years from now," Manning added. "I know I do want to stay close to it, stay connected to it."

Owner: Lamar Jackson Will Run Less In 2019

May 30, 2019 10:27 AM

Steve Bisciotti said on Wednesday night that Lamar Jackson will run less for the Baltimore Ravens this coming season.

During a conference call with season-ticket holders, the owner was asked several questions about the young franchise quarterback. Last season, Jackson set the NFL record for quarterbacks by running 147 times.

"I think you'll be pleasantly surprised that Lamar is not going to be running 20 times a game," Bisciotti said. "That's not what this offense is about."

When Jackson took over for Joe Flacco, he won six of seven starts to lead the Ravens to their first AFC North title since 2012. He also averaged 17 carries per game.

Antonio Brown Focused On Building Relationship With Derek Carr

May 29, 2019 9:37 AM

Antonio Brown believes it's important that he builds a relationship on and off the field with Derek Carr.

Brown famously lacked a strong relationship off the field with Ben Roethlisberger as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"It's tremendously important to have a relationship off the field because playing football you get mentally tired, you get frustrated, you always want to have that respect for the guy to know where he's coming from, know what he stands for and know what's important to him so you guys can be on the same page, and do what you desire to do — and you desire to win," Brown said.

Travis Benjamin Wants To Accept Ted Ginn's 40-Yard Dash Challenge

May 29, 2019 9:34 AM

Ted Ginn recently said he'd race anyone for $10,000, but Travis Benjamin says the New Orleans Saints wide receiver won't battle him.

Benjamin said he tried to accept Ginn's challenge and that he hoped to participate in next month's planned 40-yard dash tournament featuring several NFL players, but he never heard back.

"When I wrote them they didn't write me back, so I knew what that was," Benjamin said. "I won't back down from a challenge one bit. I'm a competitive person. If you want to get on the field and race, we can race."
