49ers Release Ahmad Brooks

Aug 26, 2017 9:58 AM

The San Francisco 49ers have released Ahmad Brooks.

Brooks joined the 49ers in 2008 and was their longest-tenured defensive player.

Last week, in a preseason loss to Denver, Brooks was replaced in the starting lineup by Eli Harold, 23, who will earn $634,000 in base salary on a contract that runs through 2018.

“Ahmad can still do things — I think everybody knows that,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said. “He’s going to help somebody this year. … It’s really been nothing against Ahmad. It’s how are we going to get 53 guys on this team that are the right type of 53 guys? You think of guys that might not be as ready in Week 1, but they might be ready in Week 3.”

Eagles Release Ryan Mathews

Aug 15, 2017 1:57 PM

Ryan Mathews was medically cleared from his neck injury suffered last season and immediately released by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mathews suffered a herniated disk in his neck in Week 16 last season.

"We want to thank Ryan for his contributions to the Philadelphia Eagles over the past two seasons," the team said in a statement. "We spoke today and had a productive conversation about his future and the direction of our team going forward.

"First and foremost, we are glad that Ryan is healthy and has been cleared to return to football activities but given the current state of our running back position, we feel like it is best for both sides to go in a different direction. We wish him all the best as he continues his career."

The long-expected move gives the team $4 million in cap relief.

Buccaneers Waive 2nd Round Pick Kicker Roberto Aguayo

Aug 12, 2017 3:14 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have waived kicker Roberto Aguayo.

Aguayo, who was a second round pick in 2016, missed an extra field goal and a 47-yard field goal in Friday's preseason game.

"Honestly, the extra point felt good. I know I pushed it a little bit, and I felt hopefully it would stay in but it broke right. Unlucky," Aguayo said after the game. "That last one, I was just trying to put a good hit on it. I hit it good. It was starting down the line and it just kept fading.

"Not what I wanted. Obviously not up to the standards that I want. You just have to keep your head up move on to the next day."
