Saints Release C.J. Spiller

Sep 14, 2016 10:39 AM

The New Orleans Saints have released C.J. Spiller.

Spiller signed a four-year, $16 million contract with the Saints during the 2015 offseason.

Sean Payton said Spiller was scratched because there wasn't room for him in the Raiders game plan, adding that Spiller's role could change "week to week."

But when the NFL posted Tuesday's transactions, Spiller's contract had been terminated.

In 2015, Spiller gained 112 yards rushing and 239 yards receiving in 13 games, his lone significant highlight being a late-game, 80-yard touchdown catch in a victory over Dallas.

Bruce Miller Released By 49ers Following Assault Arrest

Sep 6, 2016 8:41 AM

Bruce Miller has been released by the San Francisco 49ers hours after he was arrested on an assault charge.

Miller was arrested at 11:25 am PT Monday and taken to San Francisco County Jail. He is being held on $178,000 bond and being charged with assault with a deadly weapon (not a firearm), two counts of criminal threats, battery and elder abuse.

Miller tried to enter a hotel room occupied by an elderly couple. The couple's 29-year-old son, staying in the next room, then told Miller he was at the wrong room. Miller, who was intoxicated at the time, attacked the son and his 70-year-old father, who came to his son's defense, police said.

The father was punched by Miller and both men were taken to the hospital for their injuries, police said.

Miller was entering his sixth season with the team and represented the tight ends on the team's leadership council, which includes a player from every position.

Miller was also arrested in March 2015 in Santa Clara on suspicion of spousal battery after his then-fiancée accused him of shoving her and smashing her cellphone during an argument.

Mark Sanchez To Sign With Cowboys

Sep 4, 2016 9:18 PM

Mark Sanchez will sign with the Dallas Cowboys on a one-year deal after being released by the Denver Broncos.

Sanchez's future in Denver looked bleak after Broncos coach Gary Kubiak named Trevor Siemian his starting quarterback and had rookie Paxton Lynch take all the snaps in the team's preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals.

John Elway said he had "a long talk'' with Sanchez Saturday morning.

"I will tell you this ... he handled it with great class,'' Elway said. "I know he's disappointed, he wanted to stay here and, you know, we just thought with where we are, we thought it was best for us to different ways at this time. But Mark was great, and you know what? He handled everything great ... I thought he handled it great and it's just unfortunate he didn't win that job.''

Bills Release Projected Starting OLB Manny Lawson

Sep 2, 2016 8:16 PM

The Buffalo Bills have released Manny Lawson in a surprise move.

Lawson, 32, was expected to start opposite Jerry Hughes in the Bills' 3-4 defense until first-round pick Shaq Lawson (shoulder surgery) returns from the physically unable to perform list. The earliest Lawson is eligible to return is Week 7.

Lorenzo Alexander will start at outside linebacker instead.

"Lorenzo Alexander has earned the right to be a starter on this team. He won the job. That's why he'll start," Rex Ryan said. "As far as specifics [on Lawson], I'd rather not get into specifics."
