Washington Releases Robert Griffin III

Mar 8, 2016 11:28 AM

Robert Griffin III has been released by Washington.

Griffin had lost the starting job in August and served as Washington's No. 3 quarterback all season. He was active for one game.

Washington had hoped to trade Griffin.

Washington traded up in the 2012 draft, giving up two first-round picks and a second and swapping first-rounders with St. Louis.

At one point, then-coach Mike Shanahan told reporters, "I don't think anybody in the history of the league has played at his level. At least over the last 40 years, when I take a look at the numbers and what he has done, I don't think anybody has played at his level. As we've talked about before, he's got a unique skill set -- his ability to throw, drop back, play action, put a threat on a defense with his running ability -- and he will just get better and better. He's just scratching the surface. And the reason I say that is because he works at it."

Chargers Cut Donald Butler

Mar 3, 2016 10:22 PM

The San Diego Chargers have cut Donald Butler two seasons into a seven-year, $51.8 million contract.

"It's been an amazing ride SD," Butler wrote. "To my teammates and fans who have supported me throughout (the) last 6 years I am forever appreciative and grateful. Also, to the Spanos family for giving me the opportunity to play in a great city in front of great fans. So excited for what's next and the opportunities ahead! To God be the glory!"

The move creates $9.41 million in salary-cap space for San Diego, but also saddles the Chargers with $18.69 million in dead money.

The Chargers view Denzel Perryman as a "star in the making" at inside linebacker.

Panthers Release Charles Johnson

Mar 3, 2016 11:23 AM

The Carolina Panthers have released Charles Johnson.

The move clears $11 million in salary cap space as Johnson was set to count just over $15 million against the 2016 cap.

Carolina now has more than $26 million in cap space.

"Charles was an impact player for the Carolina Panthers for a long time, both on and off the field," general manager Dave Gettleman said in a release. "His statistics speak for themselves, and as a team captain he led the way you want your leaders to lead -- by example.

"I wish him the best moving forward."

The Panthers could still re-sign Johnson in free agency.

Roddy White Released By Falcons

Mar 2, 2016 5:26 PM

Roddy White has been released by the Atlanta Falcons with two seasons remaining on his current deal.

White, who is out of the country, declined to discuss the details of his release. He did relay this message to Falcons fans: "I love them. I enjoyed. And it was fun.''

In a text to ESPN's Josina Anderson, White said he wants to play in the NFL "another year or 2."

White was due to make $4.25 million in 2016 with a high salary cap figure of $6,137,500. He previously said he had no desire to take a paycut.

His release provides a cap savings of just $2,362,500 in 2016.

"Roddy is one of the greatest players to ever put on a Falcons uniform, and even more importantly he is a man of tremendous character that I and my entire family have profound personal affection and respect for," Falcons owner Arthur Blank said in a statement Wednesday.
