Redskins Believe Alex Smith Will Miss All Of 2019 Season

Jan 28, 2019 8:52 AM

The Washington Redskins are planning as though they won't have Alex Smith at all in 2019, according to sources.

Smith's first season in Washington was cut short by a gruesome leg injury that will take considerable time to heal. He suffered a compound fracture in Week 11.

The Redskins would be surprised if Smith were able to play at all next season.

The quarterback has battled infections, which have lengthened the recovery process.

Greg Zuerlein Kept Foot Injury Secret From Rams

Jan 27, 2019 8:44 AM

Greg Zuerlein strained his planting foot while warming up at halftime of the NFC Championship Game, but elected not to tell the Los Angeles Rams.

He went on to make two vital kicks in the fourth quarter and the 57-yard, game-winning field goal in overtime.

"Yeah, hit something hard in the ground. Just warming up at halftime, landed on something that didn't give as much as turf and then that's when it started hurting," Zuerlein said. "But, hopefully, a few more days of treatment and it'll be good to go."

Zuerlein missed practice Friday, but is carrying no injury designation heading into Super Bowl week.

49ers 'Hopeful' Jimmy Garoppolo Can Participate In OTAs

Jan 24, 2019 8:32 AM

The San Francisco 49ers are "hopeful" that Jimmy Garoppolo will be able to participate in organized team activities.

"We're hopeful he's going to get to take part in our OTAs," John Lynch told the NFL Network. "That's the plan, and he hasn't had any setbacks, so he's doing really well. I'm really proud of him too."

Lynch said that Garoppolo and running back Jerick McKinnon, who both suffered season-ending knee injuries, are competing in rehab to out-recover one another.

"Jimmy is vigorously trying to catch Jet, who is trying to separate from Jimmy, and so there's competition going on as well," Lynch told Ian Rapoport. "I think both those guys will tell you that's really helped them, (having) somebody to go through it with. It's fun."

Panthers Acknowledge Possibility Cam Newton Could Sit In 2019

Jan 16, 2019 8:29 AM

The Carolina Panthers are keeping all options open as Cam Newton deals with a sore right shoulder.

David Tepper, Carolina's owner, included the possibility of not having Newton available next season.

"If you told me he took a year off and could recover and be fully recovered and everything else, and that's what it took, an extra year, why wouldn't you do [that]?'" Tepper said.

"Now we would have to do other things, right? We'd have to go out and get another quarterback. If you could find me some more cap space I'd appreciate that."

Newton was shut down the final two games of the season when it became apparent the strength in his throwing shoulder, which was surgically repaired prior to the 2017 season, was hampering his effectiveness.

Todd Gurley 'Good To Go' Against Cowboys

Jan 11, 2019 8:33 AM

The Los Angeles Rams expect Todd Gurley to be at full strength when they face the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday night.

Gurley missed the last two weeks of the regular season with a knee injury, but returned to practice this week.

"He looks like Todd," Sean McVay said. "He looks like the explosive, great back that we're used to seeing."

C.J. Anderson ran well in Gurley's absence and is expected to remain in the rotation during L.A.'s playoff run.
