D.J. Hayden continues to struggle to stay on the field and will miss the first six games of the season after the Oakland Raiders placed him on the Physically Unable to Perform List.
Hayden missed all of last offseason as he recovered from his second heart surgery and missed time during the regular season with a groin injury.
But he injured his foot during OTAs this past summer, and though the injury originally was thought to be minor, Hayden still hasn't recovered fully.
Cam Newton suffered a hairline fracture to a rib during Friday night's loss at the New England Patriots and will not play in Thursday's preseason finale for the Carolina Panthers at Pittsburgh.
Ron Rivera is optimistic Newton, who missed most of the offseason recovering from surgery on his left ankle, will be ready to play in the Sept. 7 opener at Tampa Bay.
"I do [expect him to be ready], but a lot of it is he had to get past the soreness, which we expect, and we'll see how he starts to progress," Rivera said after Sunday's practice.
Newton was in a great deal of pain when he arrived at the stadium on Sunday. He was sent him for an MRI and CAT scan.
Sam Bradford suffered a torn ACL in his left knee when he was hit by D.J. Swearinger.
"[This is] devastating for Sam," said Jeff Fisher.
It is the same injury that sidelined Bradford in the middle of last season.
"Anyone that's gone through that procedure and the rehab understands and to have it happen again within the calendar year is very, very difficult," Fisher said. "We're thinking of Sam. I met with him this morning. He's left the building to spend time with his parents. I really can't give you any timetable as to when he's going to have this procedure done."
The St. Louis Rams are confident that Sam Bradford did not sustain a serious knee injury on Saturday.
"I can't speculate but it appeared just to be a hyperextension of the same knee," Jeff Fisher said. "He's walking around fine inside right now. That's all I can tell you."
A league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that initial tests did not show any damage to Bradford's surgically repaired left ACL, adding that the Rams "dodged a bullet."
Bradford will undergo an MRI no later than Sunday, Fisher confirmed Saturday night.
Wes Welker suffered a concussion on a hit to the helmet from D.J. Swearinger.
Welker missed three games last season after sustaining two concussions.
"It was determined it was a concussion," John Fox said. "He'll go through the protocol. The biggest thing on him is, of course, player safety. He'll go through the protocol."
In terms of a timetable for Welker's return, Fox said that will be determined by doctors.
"We'll leave that to the medical people and he won't come back until he's ready to come back," the coach said.
LeSean McCoy left the Philadelphia Eagles' 31-21 preseason win over the Pittsburgh Steelers with a right thumb injury.
X-rays on McCoy's thumb were negative, but he didn't return after his 22-yard touchdown catch gave Philadelphia a 7-0 lead.
Chip Kelly called McCoy's thumb injury "no big deal," although McCoy acknowledged it was sore.
"A helmet hit it," McCoy said, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. "It definitely hurts. But there have been times I've been banged up and it turns out fine. We'll see what happens."
Colin Kaepernick played through a foot injury in 2013.
Kaepernick revealed to The Sacramento Bee this week that he suffered a chipped bone on his forefoot and a ruptured capsule in the ball of his foot when a Seahawks defender landed on it in a Week 2 loss at Seattle.
After rushing for 87 yards against the Seahawks, Kaepernick didn't clear 20 yards on the ground again for more than a month.
"I noticed it, especially in practice," Jim Harbaugh said in March of Kaepernick's limited mobility. "I think anytime you have a foot, a hand or a finger, it affects you throwing and running."
DeVonte Holloman's career may be over due to a neck injury.
The Dallas Cowboys were hoping Holloman would help replace Sean Lee at linebacker.
The second-year player left Saturday's contest against the Baltimore Ravens after injuring his neck late in the game. A sixth-round pick in 2013, Holloman missed seven games last season with a spinal contusion.
"I don't know anything medical about it," Jason Garrett said. "I don't know that much about it, specific things in regards to that. But it has to do with his neck and he had that injury last year, and dealt with it again this year. And it's a very challenging, difficult thing for a young man who has dreams of being an NFL football player, achieves those dreams. And I told him this morning, I said, 'You're a 10-year player in my mind, you were gonna play for a long, long time.'"
Chip Kelly believes that concerns over LeSean McCoy's turf toe are overblown.
"He practiced full yesterday, and he's fine," Kelly said. "It's not as big an issue as I think anybody's made it out to be."
Kelly said the situation was "overblown" for a player missing one practice in August.
