Cutler Could Be Done For Season

Oct 31, 2014 3:41 PM

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler said Wednesday he'd "want to play next week if they let me," but admitted that because of the uncertainty about the time frame for recovery from his broken right thumb that "it could be [that] I'm done for the season." Cutler said he didn't want to put a specific date on his return because of all the variables concerning the recovery process. He underwent surgery in Colorado last week. Doctors inserted three screws and two pins to stabilize the right thumb. Cutler disclosed that depending on how fast he heals, the pins could be removed "anytime after three weeks, [but they could stay] up to 10 weeks," but the screws would remain. "So it's just a matter of if they're not hindering me being able to throw the ball, [whether] I'm comfortable with them, if they're not pinching," Cutler said. "There's a lot of factors."

The Seahawks will not have wide receiver Sidney Rice for Thursday night's game against the Eagles. Rice suffered a concussion on Sunday, his second head injury in three games. "We spread it more," coach Pete Carroll said of the offense. "Mike [Williams] has had some opportunities here in the last couple weeks that we didn't capitalize on. We're still going to him. We've given him a lot of balls and all. Just unfortunately, the numbers aren't working out."

'Strong Possibility' Leinart Done For Season

Oct 16, 2014 10:54 PM

Texans quarterback Matt Leinart, making his first start of the season in place of the injured Matt Schaub, hurt his throwing shoulder Sunday at Jacksonville. Leinart believes he broke his collarbone, but coach Gary Kubiak said initial X-rays were inconclusive. "There's a pretty strong possibility I probably won't be coming back this season," Leinart said. "It's pretty disappointing. It's tough to swallow, but we'll just move forward. Everything that's happened to me, this was a great opportunity. ... It's unfortunate, but I'm not going to give up. It's not my nature. I'll just keep moving forward and figure this thing out one step at a time."

Polamalu, who had been dealing with some sore ribs, looked a bit wobbly as he got up. He was helped to the sideline by trainers and did not return on Pittsburgh's next defensive series.
