NFL Execs Concerned With Precedent Set By Antonio Brown

Mar 28, 2019 9:27 AM

Several high ranking executives are concerned about the precedent of Antonio Brown forcing his way off the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason with his trade to the Oakland Raiders.

Brown wanted a new contract the Steelers were never going to give him.

“It’s a problem. Other star players see this and might want to do the same,” one source said. “I know the Steelers had a difficult situation and needed to get rid of him. But they had other options.”

Pittsburgh had Brown under contract for three more years at a total of $38.925 million.

“It was a very un-Steeler-like move,” one source said.

“He was crazy enough to pull this off,” one veteran agent said. “Most guys aren’t wired that way. The contracts and rules are in place.”

Le'Veon Bell also went down an unconventional path to accomplish his goals, which included higher guarantees.

“I’ve seen too many injuries not to value that,” Bell said. “I’ve seen the Steelers pretty much cut Troy Polamalu, a future Hall of Famer. [Polamalu retired with two years left on his contract.] AB did what he felt was best for him. My situation was different, but we both wanted to get our fair value. That’s what every player wants.”

Russell Wilson, Seahawks Have Only Had 'Topical' Extension Talks

Mar 27, 2019 11:11 AM

Russell Wilson will be the next elite quarterback to discuss an extension with his incumbent team, which could set a new bar for contracts.

The Seattle Seahawks and Wilson have barely begun their talks.

"We've been in communication, sure. It's very topical. We're on it," said Pete Carroll.

Aaron Rodgers signed a four-year, $134 million extension with the Green Bay Packers in 2018, which could potentially climb to $180 million.

Bobby Wagner, Seahawks Open Extension Talks

Mar 27, 2019 8:08 AM

The Seattle Seahawks have opened extension talks with Bobby Wagner.

Pete Carroll said on Tuesday that Wager is “going to be a Seahawk” when all is said and done.

Wagner is representing himself in contract talks.

“It’s more challenging [for players representing themselves] that they can know, because to get through the process, there’s a lot to it,” Carroll said. “Bobby’s going to have good support around him; he has asked a lot of questions so that he will be prepared to deal with it, and I know he’ll do a good job and all. But it’s maybe more difficult than I think a guy can imagine going into it the first time. The conversations and issue and stuff to learn and all that, I think he’s looking forward to that, just to see what it’s all about.”

Eaglers Prioritizing Long-Term Extension With Carson Wentz

Mar 26, 2019 7:55 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles are prioritizing a contract extension for Carson Wentz this offseason.

"It's important to us that we have relationships with our players where we keep things in-house, and contract talks are a big part of that," Howie Roseman said when asked about the timing of such a deal. "But obviously, having Carson here long-term is our goal, and we'll work toward that."

Roseman said that management has been talking about the prospect of a long-term deal for Wentz for the past two years.

"I think that once you see the type of impact that he can have on the field, the kind of player he is, the type of work ethic he has, you start planning about how you're going to build a team around a highly paid player at that position," he said. "Obviously, we're getting to the point where that's going to become a reality, so some of the decisions that we have to make are going to be influenced by that. We're trying to plan by getting more young players into our system."

The Eagles let Nick Foles go in free agency this offseason, signaling the extent of their commitment to Wentz.

Rob Gronkowski has announced his retirement from the NFL at the age of 29 via a post on Instagram. Gronkowski's 79 touchdown receptions since he joined the Patriots as a second-round draft choice in 2010 led the NFL.

View this post on Instagram

It all started at 20 years old on stage at the NFL draft when my dream came true, and now here I am about to turn 30 in a few months with a decision I feel is the biggest of my life so far. I will be retiring from the game of football today. I am so grateful for the opportunity that Mr. Kraft and Coach Belichick gave to me when drafting my silliness in 2010. My life experiences over the last 9 years have been amazing both on and off the field. The people I have meet, the relationships I have built, the championships I have been apart of, I just want to thank the whole New England Patriots organization for every opportunity I have been giving and learning the great values of life that I can apply to mine. Thank you to all of Pats Nation around the world for the incredible support since I have been apart of this 1st class organization. Thank you for everyone accepting who I am and the dedication I have put into my work to be the best player I could be. But now its time to move forward and move forward with a big smile knowing that the New England Patriots Organization, Pats Nation, and all my fans will be truly a big part of my heart for rest of my life. It was truly an incredible honor to play for such a great established organization and able to come in to continue and contribute to keep building success. To all my current and past teammates, thank you for making each team every year special to be apart of. I will truly miss you guys. Cheers to all who have been part of this journey, cheers to the past for the incredible memories, and a HUGE cheers to the uncertain of whats next.

A post shared by Rob Gronkowski (@gronk) onMar 24, 2019 at 2:53pm PDT

"In the nine years that I have known Rob Gronkowski, I have never known him to have a bad day," Kraft said in a statement later Sunday. "He always has a youthful exuberance about him and is a joy to be around. As a player, he earned the respect of his coaches and teammates for his hard work, preparation, selfless attitude and the sheer dominance of his game. 'Gronk' quickly became a fan favorite and the most dominant player at his position for nearly a decade. I look forward to honoring him in the near future as both a Patriots and Pro Football Hall of Famer. "
