Patriots Open To Extending Tom Brady's Contract

Feb 1, 2019 8:25 AM

Tom Brady, who turns 42 in August, is only under contract through the 2019 season.

Robert Kraft says the New England Patriots have no reservations about extending the quarterback's contract.

Brady has repeatedly said he plans to play until he's 45.

"Think about it: The last three years we've been privileged to go to the Super Bowl with a quarterback in place. I would be quite surprised if he didn't continue for quite a while as our quarterback," Kraft said.

Brady is scheduled to count $27 million against the salary cap.

Jacoby Brissett Wants To Be A Starter

Jan 27, 2019 7:26 PM

Jacoby Brissett says that he'd rather be a starter than remain Andrew Luck's backup.

Chris Ballard recently said that to trade Brissett, "it would take somebody doing something that would blow me away, and it has to be the right thing for the kid, too."

Brissett isn't trying to force his way out of Indianapolis, but stating his preference.

"I want to be a starter in this league," he said. "If that's what you're asking me, yeah, I want to be a starter in this league."

Eric Weddle Now Open To Playing Elsewhere

Jan 24, 2019 8:18 AM

Eric Weddle is reversing course on his declaration that he'd either play for the Baltimore Ravens in 2019 or retire.

About two weeks after saying he'd retire if the Ravens released him, the safety now says he's open to playing elsewhere.

Weddle, 34, is scheduled to make $6.5 million in 2019, which is the final year of his four-year, $26 million deal.

"I'm not sure if things are going to get worked out with Baltimore. Obviously, I want to be back," Weddle said. "[We'll] see if there's something to be worked out. If not, then I've had an unbelievable experience here and loved every second. So, if it does happen, we both move on, and we'll see if I'll play somewhere else or hang 'em up."

Cowboys Now Comfortable With Long-Term Deal For DeMarcus Lawrence

Jan 23, 2019 8:01 AM

DeMarcus Lawrence played the 2018 season under the franchise tag and the Dallas Cowboys have become "more comfortable" with awarding him a long-term deal.

The defensive end followed up his 14.5 sacks in 2017 with 64 tackles, 10.5 sacks, an interception and two forced fumbles this season.

"I wouldn't say we were a long ways apart; we were apart," Stephen Jones said. "Certainly DeMarcus has done his part to make us feel more comfortable. He put together now two back-to-back, double-digit sack seasons. Of course he's a leader by example. … Nothing's changed in terms of my opinion, except for the better."

Eli Manning's Agent Hasn't Heard From Giants Yet

Jan 22, 2019 8:46 AM

Eli Manning's agent has yet to speak with the New York Giants about his future.

Tom Condon was asked if he expects Manning to return to the Giants next season.

“Shoot, yeah. I think so . . . I think he’ll be back,” said Condon.

The Giants have missed the playoffs in five of the past six seasons and is now 38 years old with one season remaining on his contract.

If Manning plays under his current deal, his cap hit will be $23.2 million for 2019.

The Giants could approach Manning about a pay cut.

New York could target a quarterback with the sixth overall pick while there are also a few free agents at the position with ties to Pat Shurmur.

Partick Mahomes Could Land First $200M Deal In 2020

Jan 20, 2019 9:41 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to extend Patrick Mahomes' contract after next season, according to league sources.

It would be the first time the MVP candidate is eligible for an extension and he could receive the NFL's first $200 million contract.

However, some issues will have to be addressed -- some surrounding the collective bargaining agreement that would have only two seasons remaining, and some involving the two years that Mahomes would have left on his current contract, including the fifth-year option that Kansas City undoubtedly would exercise.

Chargers Ready To Discuss New Contract With Philip Rivers

Jan 18, 2019 8:11 AM

Philip Rivers says he wants to play a few more seasons and the Los Angeles Chargers want him around.

The quarterback is entering the final year of his contract, but general manager Tom Telesco said the Chargers want to begin conversations at some point about a new deal with Rivers.

Rivers signed a four-year, $83.5 million extension before the 2015 season that includes a no-trade clause.

"I can tell you he's not going anywhere, so he's going to be here," Telesco said. "We'll talk at the right point, as far as the moves we need to make in the offseason, the resources we have and how it all fits in. But yeah, he's not going anywhere."
