Chargers Won't Re-Sign Antonio Gates

Apr 27, 2018 6:02 PM

The Los Angeles Chargers informed Antonio Gates they do not intend to re-sign him.

Gates would like to continue his playing career even if it is not with the Chargers.

Gates played 478 snaps, finishing with 30 catches for 316 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Philip Rivers said two weeks ago that he and Gates talked through text messages about his future.

"Shoot, I've been not only locker mates but spent a lot of time with Antonio over the last 14 seasons," Rivers said. "Great player. Great person. We all know our friendship. You'd love for him to get one more shot to be with us and go make a run at it. ... If it were not to work out, and if he were to decide to hang it up, who knows? He's had a heck of a run. He has nothing left to prove, that's for sure."

Jason Witten Likely To Retire To Become Monday Night Football Analyst

Apr 27, 2018 1:03 PM

Jason Witten is considering retirement to join ESPN as a color analyst for Monday Night Football.

Witten has a meeting set on Friday with Jerry Jones to inform him of his decision. It won't become final without Jones' blessing.

Despite having signed a new four-year contract and saying he planned to play beyond this season, Witten has been engaged in talks to become a game analyst with multiple networks, including ESPN, for several weeks, sources said.

"I know this: The burn is strong inside me to play at a high level and to be a part of one of these groups of guys and one of the leaders to see this thing through and go try to compete for a championship," Witten said after the Cowboys' season-ending win against the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 31.

"When I wake up tomorrow, that's where my focus will be on as I move forward. It hurts because you don't get a whole lot more opportunities at this and I realize that. But rest assured that I'm going to do everything in my power to help us be better as we move forward. And I think it needs to be clear that it starts with yourself."

Tony Romo similarly retired last offseason to become a color analyst with CBS.

Cowboys Rule Out Re-Signing Dez Bryant

Apr 24, 2018 4:31 PM

Jerry Jones has ruled out the possibility of the Dallas Cowboys re-signing Dez Bryant even at a reduced rate.

"We need to move on knowing that we don't have Dez," Jones said in a news conference Tuesday.

Bryant was released by the Cowboys on April 13th.

The Cowboys did not offer Bryant a pay cut and did not designate him a post-June 1 cut.

Bryant had been slated to make $12.5 million and count $16.5 million against the cap in 2018. The Cowboys saved $8.5 million against the cap by cutting him.

Seahawks Haven't Ruled Out Signing Colin Kaepernick

Apr 23, 2018 8:01 PM

The Seattle Seahawks have yet to rule out signing another backup quarterback, which could include Colin Kaepernick.

The Seahawks reportedly canceled a meeting with Kaepernick over a discussion on his anthem stance.

“I think that got blown up like that was a big marker,’’ Pete Carroll said. “I think we have been working at this thing for some time now so I don’t think that really is as telling as it came across. We’re aware of him. He’s a fine football player and there may be a place for him. We’re not sure about where that fits just yet.’’

Carroll was asked specifically about the importance of Kaepernick’s stance on the anthem.

“I think he’s continuing to work on the stuff that’s really important to his heart," said Carroll. That’s what it looks like. He’s been recognized with an award just recently. Everything’s important. We take everything into account to make the decisions that we make. It’s no different for the quarterback spot than any other spot we’re considering.”

Ravens Sign Willie Snead To Two-Year, $7M Deal

Apr 23, 2018 11:00 AM

The Baltimore Ravens signed Willie Snead to an offer sheet last week and it will not be matched by the New Orleans Saints.

Snead was tendered at the lowest level so Baltimore does not owe any compensation for signing the wideout.

Snead's contract will be a two-year, $7 million deal with another $3.4 million in incentives.

Snead reported to the Saints' workouts last week without signing his restricted free agent tender.

Giants Release Brandon Marshall

Apr 19, 2018 6:38 PM

Brandon Marshall has been released by the New York Giants after failing a physical.

Marshall signed a two-year, $11 million deal last offseason.

Marshall was struggling before suffering a left ankle injury in Week 5 that required season-ending surgery.

Marshall had a cap hit of $6.2 million for the 2018 season, which would have been the seventh highest on the team. The Giants will save $5.156 million by releasing him. According to NFL Players Association records, the team was $4.9 million under the cap as of Thursday morning.

Marshall has been working in broadcasting over the past few years.
