Jaguars Expected To Keep Blake Bortles

Jan 31, 2018 8:37 AM

The Jacksonville Jaguars are content with Blake Bortles and won't pursue another quarterback this offseason.

Bortles recently underwent wrist surgery. His $19 million contract is guaranteed for injury, so if he’s not ready to pass a physical on March 14, he's covered.

Cowboys To Open Contract Talks With DeMarcus Lawrence

Jan 29, 2018 12:16 AM

The Dallas Cowboys and DeMarcus Lawrence are set to open talks on a contract.

"It's great for them to prioritize me as being a Cowboy," said Lawrence, who's at the Pro Bowl in Orlando this week. "I'm not worried about it. I'm gonna let my agent worry about that part. ... I believe and trust in him 100 percent to get the job done."

Lawrence posted 14.5 sacks in a contract year.

"I would imagine that they're probably not just letting us get to free agency and leave Dallas," said agent David Canter.

"It's really up to them to want to do a deal that's in line with what the market is for a young, ascending, elite franchise-caliber defensive end," Canter said. "Whatever that number ends up being remains to be seen. But I do imagine and believe that we'll have multiple conversations over the next month or so. I think it's early right now."

Le'Veon Bell Encouraged By Contract Talks With Steelers

Jan 26, 2018 5:32 PM

Le'Veon Bell has been encouraged by the progress he's made with the Pittsburgh Steelers on a contract extension.

Even though he declined to offer specifics, Bell said he is "happy" with what the team has presented to him.

"We are a lot closer than we were last year," Bell said. "I'm happy and the Steelers are happy right now where we're at. Obviously we have to continue to get it done."

Bell turned down a long-term contract in 2017 and played under a $12.1 million franchise tag. If the Steelers tag Bell again, it would be worth approximately $14.5 million.

Bell's career average of 129 yards from scrimmage per game is the most for an NFL player over the first five years of a career.

Browns, 49ers Lead NFL In 2018 Cap Space By Huge Margin

Jan 24, 2018 10:50 AM

The Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers will lead the NFL in cap space in the 2018 offseason by a wide margin.

Spotrac currently projects the 49ers to have $119,909,412 in salary cap space available, assuming a league-wide salary cap of $178 million plus the $59,518,621 in remaining cap the team will roll over from 2017. The Browns project to have just over $112 million.

The next closest team are the Indianapolis Colts at $35.6 million.

The 49ers would like to agree upon a contract extension with Jimmy Garoppolo that could be front-loaded.

"I think we'll always be aggressive," Kyle Shanahan said. "I think we were aggressive last year. I think being aggressive is you've got to look at what your options are and what you believe is the right way to go. Whatever you decide on that, being aggressive is going out and getting those guys. I think that's exactly what we did last year, maybe not a lot of high guys that seemed like it, but we went and got all the guys that we wanted to, that we targeted from the beginning. I didn't feel like we lost on anybody. We'll go into this year the same way."

Six of the top-10 spenders in free agency in 2017 reached the playoffs as it has become one of the NFL's best competitive advantages.

Blake Bortles Hopes To Return To Jaguars Next Season

Jan 24, 2018 9:00 AM

The Jacksonville Jaguars picked up the fifth-year option on Blake Bortles' contract for 2018, but there is no guarantee he'll return to the team.

The quarterback's $19.053 million salary only becomes fully guaranteed on the first day of the league year (March 14). The Jaguars haven't indicated whether they want him to return.

"I've enjoyed my four years here in Jacksonville, and I would love to be able to play here for as long as they would let me," Bortles said. "What they do and all the decisions that are made are kind of out of my control. I'd be thrilled to be able to stay here and play here, and hopefully that can happen."

Bortles very nearly led the Jaguars to a victory over the New England Patriots and the trip to the Super Bowl this past Sunday.

He completed 60.2 percent of his passes for 3,687 yards and 21 touchdowns with 13 interceptions during the regular season and led the Jaguars to a 10-6 record and the AFC South title.
