USC Star RB Has Surgery Following Weightlifting Accident

Sep 23, 2014 6:44 PM

USC running back Stefon Johnson was lifting weights Monday morning when he apparently lost control of the bar and it landed on his neck. He was reportedly spitting up blood and was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he is undergoing surgery, according to the USC website. Chris Carlisle, USC's strength and conditioning coach, said such an accident was rare. "I've seen players have the bar slip and fall onto their chest, but never in my 25 years of coaching have I heard of someone dropping a bar on their throat," the coach said. Carlisle, who was within feet of Johnson when the accident occurred, said an assistant strength and conditioning coach was acting as a "spotter" for the player. Coach Pete Carroll called the incident "an unfortunate accident," adding that "our thoughts and prayers are with Stafon." Johnson has rushed for five touchdowns so far this season.

Mustain's Future At USC Could Be As Punter

Jun 25, 2014 4:16 AM

Mitch Mustain might not be able to find his way into the lineup at quarterback, but he could possibly do it as a punter. Impressed by kicks Mustain made for fun during last Friday's walk-through at Ohio Stadium, Carroll had Mustain punt before, during and after practice on Wednesday. Mustain also took second-team snaps at quarterback. "He's got a leg on him," said receiver Damian Williams, who estimated that Mustain punted about five times during their senior season at Springdale High in Arkansas. "Sometimes you've just got to find a way onto the field and if that's what he wants to do then hats off to him. "I was back there catching some [of his kicks] and he made me run for a couple." RealGM Note: Mustain was a true freshman starter at Arkansas during the 2006 season, but subsequently transferred to USC where he hasn't been able to elbow into starting quarterback duties.

Oregon's Blount Skips Monday's Practice

May 22, 2014 4:54 PM

LeGarrette Blount did not practice with Oregon on Monday even though he was allowed to under a season-long suspension for a postgame punch of Boise State's Byron Hout. Coach Chip Kelly said he did not expect Blount at practice. "People I think should respect he's been through a lot the past few days," Kelly said during a conference call. "He's got to make some decisions on where he is and everything. But we have a plan in place for him and when he decides to come back." On Friday, Kelly suspended Blount for the rest of the season, in effect ending his career with the Ducks. But Blount was kept on scholarship and allowed to practice.
