Leonard Fournette Challenges Void Of Guaranteed Money

Jan 18, 2019 8:10 AM

Leonard Fournette has filed a challenge with the NFL regarding the Jacksonville Jaguars' decision to void the guaranteed money in the final two years of his contract, according to a source.

An arbitrator will rule on whether the Jaguars are able to withhold the $7.1 million in guaranteed money ($2.93 million in 2019 and $4.17 million in 2020) as punishment for Fournette's NFL suspension.

The NFL suspended Fournette for one game without pay after he left the bench, ran across the field and fought the Buffalo Bills' Shaq Lawson on Nov. 25.

The Jaguars informed Fournette shortly after the suspension that they were voiding the remaining guaranteed money in his rookie contract because of a clause that allows them to do so if a player isn't able to play for reasons other than a football injury.

C.J. Anderson: 'I'm The Freshest Running Back' In NFL

Jan 18, 2019 8:22 AM

C.J. Anderson landed with the Los Angeles Rams late in the season and has flourished.

Anderson was released by the Denver Broncos last offseason. He signed with the Carolina Panthers, but played just 73 snaps before being cut. He joined the Oakland Raiders, but didn't log a snap before being let go. He has carried the ball just 90 times in 130 snaps this season.

"I'm the freshest running back in the league," Anderson said. "I'm not gonna say they're still fresh, but I'm fresher than Mark [Ingram], Alvin [Kamara] and Todd [Gurley], for sure."

Ingram, Kamara and Gurley have combined for 629 carries on 1,930 snaps.

"I think it helps a lot," Anderson said. "I've played over 1,000 snaps, 600-700 snaps in this league and when you get to this point of the season, you start to wave back and I'm out there flying around on practice, just being a kid, having fun. I look faster than everyone else, part of it because I'm fresh."

Larry Fitzgerald Hasn't Decided On Retirement

Jan 18, 2019 8:16 AM

Larry Fitzgerald has yet to decide whether or not he'll return to the Arizona Cardinals for another season.

Fitzgerald has yet to meet new coach Kliff Kingsbury, but the wide receiver thinks highly of him.

"Hell of a coach," Fitzgerald said. "Look at his resume. He's innovative offensively. That's somebody with a future right now. So, I'm excited for the chance to meet him."

The Cardinals have made it clear that they'd love to have the 35-year-old back despite his $16.85 million cap.

"I don't know yet. Taking time to figure it out still," he said.

Chargers Ready To Discuss New Contract With Philip Rivers

Jan 18, 2019 8:13 AM

Philip Rivers says he wants to play a few more seasons and the Los Angeles Chargers want him around.

The quarterback is entering the final year of his contract, but general manager Tom Telesco said the Chargers want to begin conversations at some point about a new deal with Rivers.

Rivers signed a four-year, $83.5 million extension before the 2015 season that includes a no-trade clause.

"I can tell you he's not going anywhere, so he's going to be here," Telesco said. "We'll talk at the right point, as far as the moves we need to make in the offseason, the resources we have and how it all fits in. But yeah, he's not going anywhere."

NFL Can't Find Liability Insurance For Head Trauma

Jan 17, 2019 12:42 PM

The NFL no longer has general liability insurance covering head trauma.

There is now also just one carrier willing to provide workers' compensation to NFL teams.

Before concussion litigation roiled the NFL beginning in 2011, at least a dozen carriers occupied the insurance market for pro football, according to industry experts.

While some people have said football will never go away, it is difficult to see how the youth levels can survive without insurance.

Dr. Julian Bailes, Pop Warner's medical director and a member of the NFL's Head, Neck and Spine Committee, told Outside the Lines "insurance coverage is arguably the biggest threat to the sport."

Some insurance industry executives compare the issue to asbestos, an occupational hazard that has cost insurers at least $100 billion.

Jaguars Could Be Contenders For Nick Foles

Jan 17, 2019 8:35 AM

The Jacksonville Jaguars could become leading contenders to land Nick Foles this offseason.

John DeFilippo has been named Jacksonville's offensive coordinator. DeFilippo was the quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles when Foles led the team to a Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots last February.

It remains to be seen how a team could acquire Foles this offseason -- whether he'll become a free agent or the Eagles will retain his rights to swing a trade.

Steelers Have No Immediate Plans To Extend Mike Tomlin

Jan 17, 2019 8:29 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a history of discussing extensions with their head coaches when they have two years left on their contract.

Mike Tomlin has two years left on his deal, but the Steelers aren't in a rush to extend him.

"Those are things we'll get to sort of later in the offseason, so we'll cross that bridge when we come to it," Art Rooney II said.

Rooney did, however, push back against speculation that Tomlin was on the hot seat after a disappointing season filled with drama.

"It's nonsense," the owner said. "We didn't achieve our goal of winning the division but we finished half a game out and had a lot of opportunities to get there."
