Murray Asked Romo To Take Pay Cut

Apr 1, 2015 1:22 PM

Tony Romo was asked by DeMarco Murray if he was willing to take a pay cut for him to re-sign with the Dallas Cowboys.

"DeMarco ended up asking me, 'Why don't you take a pay cut?' I said, 'I will. I would take a pay cut to go do this,'" Romo said. "I was like, 'They're going to restructure me.' That's the same thing in some ways, just for the salary cap purposes. He was like, 'OK, now we're back to being friends again.' I would take $5 million less if meant getting him back.

"He knew that. It was just funny how he was literally worried about that part of it for a week. I'm like, 'That's not the reason.' I'm like, 'Obviously I'll restructure. I would even take a pay cut.' He was like, 'OK, we can be friends again.' It's amazing what you think about in those moments."

Murray eventually signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jameis Winston Declares Himself Best Player In Draft

Mar 31, 2015 5:47 PM

Jameis Winston declared himself the best player in the draft and that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers should take him with the top overall selection.

"Because I'm the best player in the draft," Winston said.

Tampa Bay was well-represented at the workout with coach Lovie Smith, general manager Jason Licht, offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian among those in attendance.

Winston threw 102 passes, completing all but 10 of them. Most pro days feature quarterbacks making 50 or 60 throws.

"He had a great day," Licht said. "He threw a full nine innings."

Kraft Testifies Hernandez Told Him He Was Innocent Of Murder

Mar 31, 2015 10:39 PM

Robert Kraft testified that Aaron Hernandez told him he was innocent when asked whether he was involved in the murder of Odin Lloyd.

Kraft spent a little more than a half-hour on the stand Tuesday at the Fall River Justice Center after being called by the prosecution in Hernandez's murder trial.

Hernandez is charged with the June 17, 2013, slaying of Lloyd, who was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancée.

Kraft said he found Hernandez in a weight room working out and pulled him into an adjacent office for a private talk.

"I understood there was an incident that had transpired, and I wanted to know whether he was involved, and if he was -- any player that comes into our system, I consider part of our extended family, and I wanted to get him help," Kraft said.

"What did he say?" prosecutor William McCauley asked.

"He said he was not involved," Kraft replied. "That he was innocent and that he hoped that the time of the murder incident came out because he said he was in a club."

Sam Bradford's College QB Coach Encouraged Him To Continue Career

Mar 31, 2015 12:10 PM

Josh Heupel, who was Sam Bradford's quarterbacks coach at Oklahoma, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that he reached out to Bradford to encourage him to continue his career.

Bradford had torn his ACL twice in less than a year.

"I just tried to reach out to him and say: 'Hey, I still see this in you as a person and a player. I think the best is yet to come for you. You've got to get yourself healthy and get yourself back on the field and get yourself in the right environment with the right people and the right supporting cast around you, and there's no doubt in my mind you'll achieve the things you're capable of achieving and want to achieve,'" Heupel, who is now the offensive coordinator at Utah State, told the newspaper in a telephone interview.

The Philadelphia Eagles acquired Bradford from the St. Louis Rams in a trade this offseason.

Bradford said in December that he contemplated walking away from the NFL because of the injuries.

"It was really tough that first week after the injury," Bradford said in December. "There was part of me for a couple days that I was done with football. I didn't want to come back, I didn't want to play, I was tired of rehabbing. I was just tired of the process. But when you step back and you are away from the game for a while, then you come back and you're in the building and you're around your teammates, I quickly realized that I wasn't done and that I wanted to come back and that I feel like I've still got a lot to prove."
