Oct 12, 2014 2:05 AM

J.J. Watt set a Pro Football Focus grading record last season with a mark of +101.6.

The Houston Texans have struggled at times this season, but Watt is actually on pace for +101.7.

Watt's glamour numbers are down with 4.5 sacks and three passes defensed, but his overall production remains incredibly high.

Nearly Released, Crosby Wins NFC Special Teams Player Of The Month

Jul 14, 2014 11:43 PM

The Green Bay Packers very nearly gave up on Mason Crosby after making 63.6 percent of his field goals last season and then missing five of eight attempts during the team's annual Family Night scrimmage.

Crosby has made 17 of his 19 field goal attempts this season and was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Month.

“I like exactly where he is now,” Packers special teams coach Shawn Slocum said recently. “He’s really striking the ball well. I think he’s got a lot of confidence. His volume of work has been really good.”

Crosby battled for his job against two challengers and also accepted a $1.6 million pay cut with the opportunity to make it back through incentives.

Terrelle Pryor Would Be Perfect QB For Kelly's System

Jul 7, 2014 11:01 AM

When Terrelle Pryor was coming out of high school, he strongly considered committing to Oregon before eventually deciding upon Ohio State.

With Chip Kelly now head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, Pryor appears to be the ideal quarterback for that offense.

"That offense is tailor-made for Terrelle," said Ray Reitz, who coached Pryor at Jeannette High School in western Pennsylvania. "He can run. He can throw. He's big and strong. He's the total package. I think he'd flourish in that offense."

"Chip was one of my favorites," Pryor said in a conference call. "I probably would have been with him if he was a little closer. It's pretty out there, Oregon was, and it wasn't a good distance for my family. That wasn't a good deal for me."

"There are two guys that I've had an opportunity to coach against - Cam Newton and Terrelle Pryor - that when you look at them, they kind of look like an NBA power forward, but they can run," said Pryor.

NFLPA: Meriweather Contrite For Comments

Nov 4, 2014 9:10 PM

Brandon Meriweather was contrite for his comments to the media about injuring other players.

"I spoke to Brandon. He is passionate about the game, and I know he is sorry for what he said," NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said in a statement. "He is concentrating on helping his team win the rest of the season. Brandon knows that all players have a responsibility to each other and to play within the rules of the game."

Meriweather was suspended for illegal hits against the Chicago Bears.

"I guess I just got to take people's knees out," Meriweather said. "That's the only way. I would hate to end a guy's career over a rule, but I guess it's better other people than me getting suspended for longer. You just have to go low now, man. You've got to end people's careers. You got to tear people's ACLs and mess up people's knees. You can't hit them high anymore."

Percy Harvin did not practice with the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday and appears unlikely to play on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“He’s with the rehab guys,” Pete Carroll said of Harvin. “We’ll see how that goes, then see what [Thursday] brings. With the workload he’s endured to get back in shape, there’s going to be some stuff and he’s been a little bit sore.”

Harvin had hip surgery on Aug. 1 to repair a torn labrum.

Aldon Smith Out Of Rehab, Returns To 49ers' Facility

Aug 5, 2014 4:54 AM

Aldon Smith has left rehab and turned himself in in connection with a felony weapons charge.

Smith immediately posted $75,000 in bail after he was processed. Smith is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 12 in connection with the charge. He has an additional court date on Nov. 19 to face misdemeanor DUI and drug charges.

Smith has been on an "indefinite absence" from the San Francisco 49ers.

Jim Harbaugh met with Smith at the 49ers' facility on Wednesday.

"The best approach is the day-to-day approach," said Harbaugh. "And just focusing on having a good day today. Getting the most out of today and avoid the 'if this, if that, in a week, in two weeks, in a month' timetable type of talk."

The 49ers wouldn't give a return date for Smith.

Jonathan Martin Leaves Dolphins After 'Emotional Breakdown'

Jul 31, 2014 11:34 PM

Jonathan Martin has left the Miami Dolphins following an "emotional breakdown," according to a teammate.

Jay Glazer reported that Martin was the victim of a prank at the cafeteria, becoming enraged enough to "smash his food tray on the ground."

Martin sought treatment at a local hospital and has since left to spend time with his family.

Martin began the season as the Dolphins' replacement for Jake Long at left tackle and was moved to right tackle after the team acquired Bryant McKinnie.
